I had a Dell Inpsiron 8100 and the motherboard blew out on it yeasterday. All my school files were backed up... exceot for a big paper ! I tried booting it up in a fujitsu P1000 and it owuld have worked... except that I had the hard drive password protected and the fujitsu doesn't give me a password prompt and consequently the drive is unreadable. Can someone help me with this?

Download knoppix Linux.
The trick is that the OS boots off of the cdrom and you have access to your harddrive.

As a lesser extreme, couldn't you just boot off M$ cd and then do recovery?? I'm not an M$ droid, so don't know for sure.

WARNING!!! Mucking about with boot records is a good way to shoot yourself in the foot if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing. Since you've got a large paper w/o a backup, you may want to tread very cautiously.

What is M$ cd ????

I believe webweaver is using the contemptuous form of MS or MicroSoft.

The MS or M$ cd is the original installation or recovery CD for Windows or in the contemptuous, WinBlows.

Knoppix works great Allows you to get around almost any problems you may come across with access issues. Use it in school all the time

oh, ok. Good idea.

Sorry about that, force of habit I guess. Wasn't trying to bash M$, just trying to be helpful. I'm a Unix geek and accustomed to getting all my software for free. Ooops- there I did it again... But as long as we're on the subject, I'll share one of the best quotes I've ever heard about Windows from a consulting buddy of mine. This was a few years back when NT4 had just hit the streets and folks were oozing on about M$'s latest and greatest

Consultant: "You want to know what the best thing about Windows is?"

Audience: "What?"

Audience awaits the reply with bated breath...

Consultant: "How much money I can make fixing it"

Brahhahahaha!! Windoze, Winblows, Intenet Exploder... Happy I could assit expanding your vocabulary and hopefully provide minimal amusement value. Enjoy!

Good luckwith your recovery. I think you're on the right track. Lot's of OEM's cut cost these days and config the HD with a recovery partition instead of including actual media, so hopefully you've got a boot cd. Just be careful not to let WIndows try to reinstall itself.

Brilliant, I didn't even think of that, you guys are great!! I just hope that this thing works. I have to go get knoppix from my schools tech department (They have it) because I don;t have time to download it. I just hope that I can get it in time for 7th period or im dead. Just have one quick question, if the hardrive has a password, does that only block the boot loader (or interfere with loading an operating system), or does it encrypt the hard drive?

Doesn't encrypt the HD.
