I love my new Thinkpad T60P!!!

I just received my new Thinkpad T60P, and I absolutely love it! About a month ago, I was right here in this forum asking about opinions about the best 15" Windows laptop. It came down to the Macbook Pro (which can run Windows) and the Thinkpad T60p. I went with the latter.

I ordered configuration 2623DDU, which has the following:
-- 2.0Ghz Core Duo
-- 2GB of RAM
-- 100GB 7200 RPM drive
-- ATI FireGL V5200, 256MB (workstation equivalent of the ATI X1600)
-- 15" screen, 1600x1200
-- I also had to buy the advanced dock, which was the only way to get DVI output.
-- 3-year warranty by default

Highlights:

-- Absolutely gorgeous screen. It has a few stuck pixels, but I'm sending it in to Lenovo to get it fixed this week. I had thought that 1600x1200 at 15" (133 pixels/inch) would produce too small text, but I got accustomed to it very fast. My desktop computer has an LCD at 1280x1024 across 18" (which is about 91 ppi) which is fine for me. The one thing I didn't take into account is that I sit a bit closer to the laptop than when I'm using my desktop.
-- Man, this thing is fast. I mean blisteringly fast. My desktop is a circa-2004 Pentium 4 Northwood 3.0Ghz, and it's absolutely smoked by this laptop. I'm running VMWare with Fedora Core Linux inside, and it's just awesome. It's like having two computers in one. The 2GB of RAM certainly helps out.
-- The keyboard is awesome, as is well known. The keys are very responsive.
-- This thing is cool to the touch. I had tried out two Macbook Pros, and those things were scorchers (I literally could not touch parts of the MBPs when they were plugged into AC power). The T60P runs cools; it's never gotten above 55 C.
-- The only thing I missed from the Macbook Pros was evidently techno-lust from having such a sexy machine. I'll admit, those things were good-looking. However, this Thinkpad is built like a tank, and black is the new black, didn't you know?
-- The videocard is more than enough. It got ~3200 in 3DMark 05, which is in line with the T60P review at NotebookReview.com. I get about 3500 with my GeForce 6800GT in my desktop, which is plenty fast for me these days.
-- The fingerprint reader is kind of cool on this laptop, but it's much faster for me just to type in my password.
-- NOTE: I ordered my T60P on April 24, and it arrived on May 19. That's pretty darn long. I've read on other forums that the delay is due to the ATI V5200 video card, so other configurations will probably arrive much sooner (an estimate is given for each model on Lenovo's site).

It was $2799 listed on the web, but I used an employee discount to get it down to $2100.

Im glad you made your decision. Ibm's are truly awesome laptops. Other than the macbookpro, i wouldnt even touch anything else for my own personal use. Glad you like it. If you want to know some esoteric stuff just ask: for instance ibm used to have four different kinds of keybaords etc etc. Anyway spoil yourself silly with it becuase after this purchase you will be stuck with this quality and in the future you will definitely be limiting yourself on what you will buy.

Any comments on whether the T60P would be a viable desktop replacement notebook for semi-intensive general business/professional use?

I will be replacing my work desktop soon and I'm wondering about getting a notebook/docking station set-up instead. (The Dell Precision M90 looks like another option with more power but less portability than the IBM.)

^ you can find fully loaded M90's for like 2.5 k. Look in the f/s section. I would go with the M90 just because of the very powerful video card and sleek look. Look at the M90 review either at notebookreview or here

Well, not to hijack this thread, but I'm not too price sensitive -- it's more a question of first whether to replace my desktop with a well-powered notebook, and if so which one. I love the construction of the Thinkpads, but the Dell M90 looks appealing too.

I was in exactly your position last year when the t43p came out. I own a business and needed to travel as well as take my office with me. I ended up spending over a month every 2nd month of the year at another location so i had to use my ibm with the docking station connected to an external keyboard and mouse and printer as my main workstation in the home i was living in. For me it worked perfect. The only thing i had to do was purchase an external harddrive to save all my documents and such because i was only able to get the 60 gig 7200 rpm drive back than. So yes it can be used as a desktop replacement with the dock. Plus i was able to play some games on it. C and C generals, and star wars battlfront. as well as my chess stuff.

There were also times when i had to rely soley on the laptop screen and that didnt bother me at all.

Congrats shuttleboi, that is one badass computer. I really don't understand how the macbook (pro) and t60 can have the same processor, but run at such different temperatures. I've been really impressed with how cool my friend's t60 runs, and it's extremely fast.

Thecla, what do you mean by 'powerful'? I don't know anything about video cards/gaming/etc, but otherwise I can't imagine the t60p having a problem with anything you throw at it. Although I'd say it depends on how much you plan on moving it around. It might not be worth it to pay for the durability and thin/lightness of the t60 if you aren't really going to need it.

Congrats. I just got my T60P (2623DDU) on Monday and am loving it as well. I've got the EVDO Mobile Broadband card fired up and activated! Now I can work at blazing speeds anywhere. Excellent screen by the way. Very, very solid machine. I'm amazed at how cool and quiet it runs. I'm extremely satisfied.

its way too expensive but IBM's are good quality.... i like the HDD protection that thinkpads have, theres a cool realtime demo, the laptop knows when its upside down and stuff.

It actually wasn't too bad. I picked my $2,700+ T60P up for $2,273 after $200 mail in rebate. I paid $2,500 for my Travelmate 8204 (My bad). I don't regret either purchase, I just wish I knew I was going to be travling more and needing a Mobile Brandband card. Oh well. That's what eBay's for.
