Newbie checking in. Just got my 8600

Thread Starter
Hail everyone. I've been lurking for the past few days, reading bits and pieces about the 8600. I chose the 8600, since the alternative ( for me ) was a G4 powerbook. Why I chose a PC over a Mac is OT here, so I wont cover it.
I spec'd out everything, and bought the following on 6 FEB 2004:

WUXGA screen
1.7ghz CPU
512mb RAM ( I have 1GB of Kingmax that goes in tonight )
Geforce 64mb card
60GB 7200rpm disk
DVD+RW free upgrade

Got it this morning ( 11 FEB 2004 ). Initial impressions:

1. Screen was flawless. No defects, no bad pixels, no lighting issues.
2. Keyboard is a tad spongy. I'm used to the Thinkpad ( 600 forward )
3. I turned off the trackpad ASAP. Can't stand 'em ( IMHO )
4. Speed is good. Ran Sandra against it, liked what I saw ( CPU and RAM benchmarks ) Will post l8r if there's any interest
5. Took a couple of quick pic's, will post URLs later
6. XP reload will occur after I get the RAM in.
7. Trackpoint keys require above expected keypress to register a click. Given the shape of the button ( the higher ridge of the button is opposite to that of a thinkpad ... ie: its closer to the trackpad ) no shock there.
8. Will test video capture once I get the right 1394 cable. This unit is inteneded solely as a work PC ( my other PC is for play )
9. Given the size, weight is OK. May have to modify my bag, or just pick up a new one. I'm indifferent on this at the moment.
10. Am using the mini-PCI 802.11B/G card. The 8600 I have provides for turning the radio off ( FN-F2 ).
11. Given the spread/breadth of the unit, will likely tote around a wireless USB mouse I've had for a while. My hands are large , but I dont like having to move my hands very far to do things. This isnt an issue on the TP, but those chassis's are smaller ( on the T series, about 2" less width, etc )
12. Once I have WinXPoo + SP2, and RAM loaded, will push the wireless and battery around, and see hwo they play.
13. I hate McApoo products. I had to say that. Bad experiences running their AV products against production servers. Bad bad bad.

Welcome,

I am glad to see you like the 8600 and have had no problems. I use the MX 900 BT mouse and find it works very well, was using the MX 700 but wanted to try the BT out.

Have had no problems using the Truemobile 1400 with my Dlink 624, after Xp clean install.

The MX 900 isn't available in AUS atm but should be shortly, I like the look of the new Microsoft Inteli Explorer with the full ergo. design on it.

Congrats on your new 8600. I too have been lurking around the last few days as I have ordered a 8600 of similar spec which should be delivered in the next couple of days.

A question for those who are far more knowlegeable about these things than me! -
Any tips/tricks on what I should do to get the best out of my new 8600? Should i do a clean re install of XP, download any particular driver upgrades, change the dpi screen setting to what?, change any other settings etc etc etc.

Your input would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

PS great site - a good resource

Far more knowlegeable, not.

What I did was check the system out first. I then whent to the dell sight and downloaded the drivers that I wanted and then burnt them to a cd..

Then did a clean install, updated the drivers. I also stoped some XP services that I did not want running (Index and a few others.) Loaded a firewall and Virus protection and that was that.

I like the 96 dpi for most things and have not changed that. Now if I could just get the right screen

Stopping and disabling services on my PC made a huge difference

Hey all,
Can some one tell the battery performance of a Dell8600 vs Dell600m and Dell5100 'cos I heard that the 600m doesn't perform that good as one with Centrino should perform ofcourse like its weight under 5lbs but just not able to finalize between these three models with equal specs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated .....
Thanks in advance,
K.

the 8600 has a larger cell battery this is why it performs better battery life wise

Until I become more familiar with navigating through the list, I'm posting this message which was previously posted in a different thread. Please excuse the reduplicated message for those who have read this post before:

I did the reinstall and this time carefully tracked all changes I made in customizing the system. I found that when I changed the ATI display from 1920 x 1200 to 1280 x 800 I lose the volume meter. When I go back to 1920 etc., the volume meter returns. Is this indicative of the 8600 for everyone else?

Secondly, when I play games with the AC adapter plugged in, after about 5-10 minutes of play, my screen becomes distorted, filling up with lines (like interference of some kind). When I unplug the AC, the screen returns to normal. I contacted Dell Cust Support and the rep suggested changing the power scheme to "always on" (the problem still occurred). Next, she noticed that I received a 60 watt AC adapter, while she stated that I should have received a 90 instead. She shipped the 90 off and I received it the next day (yeah, fast and unanticipated that I would receive it so soon). Anyways, I used it, but when I powered up the notebook, right before the initial setup F2 screen appeared it read, "AC adapter not recognized. . . you will lose some normal performance. . ." or something stated to that degree. The cord powered up the system, but it was not recharging the battery like the 60 does when in use. Again, I called Dell cust serv, and they feel that for that message to appear, there must be some problem with the mother board and have dispatched a service tech. to visit within the next few days to replace the current mother board. The screen still becomes distorted even when using the 90 watt after about 5-10 minutes of game play. If anyone else out there in lappy land has experience this, let me know what the issues could be or how you resolved them.

Still happy with the laptop, though. Learning more about being outside and using the wireless card to access the web.

Goodday,
Sleepy
