Ok i have never owned a laptop before and i am looking into buying one. It will be used mostley for gaming and watching movies. I dont want to spend alot of money, i don really want it to cost more than $2500 canadian but a little bit over wont kill me. So far i have been looking mostly into Dell and Alienware models more specifically the Dell xps m1710 and the alienware m9700 (i know its not out yet).

Any help in picking out what one i should get would be nice and i am open to looking into other models

if your looking for something you can upgrade in the future dont go with a dell you cant realy touch the insides.

First rule about buying a laptop is, its not upgradable. Yes, occasionally you can swap out a hard drive or add more ram, even the CPU. But for the price point of doing so, its really not that upgradable. Therefore, you *want* to spend more on the initial purchase so it lasts you X number of years. If you are a gamer, X will be short (1-2 years), non gamers can last 3-4 years. With the Windows coming out with higher hardware requirements, keep that in mind as well when making your decision.

The second rule about owning a laptop is, where do you plan to lug/carry it? Great distances for long periods of time means small is good. Occasionally/short distances means large is possible. That will determine what model to investigate. Don't waste time looking at 17" notebooks you will carry and work on the train every day, unless you are a football player

Third rule about buying a laptop is, don't skimp on a warranty. Laptops are mobile, can be more fragile, be dropped, be sat on by little dogs. Having a tech come to you may be a better option than mailing it in (just how LONG can you go without your lappy?). Complete Care means they replace whatever, no questions asked (even if you play football with your lappy, though not recommended for 17" laptops )

Fourth rule about buying a laptop is, set a budget and spend every penny. If you can't afford what you want, reexamine why you are buying a laptop in the first place.

From there, ask away...

As far as upgrading goes i didnt realy expect to be able to do all that much of it so that doesnt bother me

This is mostly going to be for at home use i wont be doing much traveling with it, maby in the car occasionally on trips but mostly just for at home use

Up to this point i have always planed on getting the best warranty bacause i have read to many othe post where people are mad because the didnt get a long enough one or it ran out and the somthing broke and the end up having to pay hundreds to fix it. So warranty will be the best.

For budget i would like to keep the price around $2500 canadian. It is possible for me to go over that by a bit though

For screen size i am not really all that picky, i dont want one that is really small a 17" would Probably be my first choice.

What i need help with the most is choosing the things to get in the laptop, like should i get doul graphic's card or just a single one, and things like that
The games that i play the most are games like Command & Conquer and Starcraft but i want to start playing more first person shooter games, i dont really play alot of them now because the comp i have wont handel a whole lot of intense gaming.
