XPS Gen 2 or 1705

Ok I am in the market for a high end gaming machine but herez the problem. I am thinking about two notebooks. One XPS Gen 2 with lower specs P M and a 6800 ultra. or a 1705 with Dual Core and 7900 GS.

The question is considering price is same for both. Is there any benfit of getting XPS over a loaded 1705 (besides the fancy lights)? What do you think ?

Get the 1705, if you are not opting for the highest configurations of the XPS (which have options not available on the 1705) then you are paying for the XPS brand, nothing more. The 1705 has better specs at the same price, so go with that (unless those purdy lights float your boat )

you could always get a gen 2 with a 7800gtx instead of the 6800 at the outlet
the 6800 is a badass card the 7800 is even better

I would prolly get the 1705, as it seems the more future proof.

and i think u can just pop in a 7900gtx into the 1705, if u r thinking of upgrading. whereas in the gen2, major modificatons r required. and its still iffy if even then it will work

e1705 is basically a m1710 minus $2000 and some flashy lights

definately get e1705

I just went through the same dilema, and after much research decided that the 1705 is the better choice. Its just more future proof, you can buy it with a 7900GS for around $1300, and down the road if needed to play your favorite games - you have the option to upgrade to the 7900GTX (hoping Dell will even let us buy it).

With the Gen2, your basically at a dead end after the 7800GTX upgrade - which requires modifications to even get in there. Everything pretty much drops right into the 1705, including the new Merom processors!

If you notice, alot of Gen2 owners on these baords have sold they're Gen2 and picked up M1710s or 1705s - thats enough proof for me

Good luck!

...The obvious choice for me would be the 1705. It offers an upgrade option that is not availabe with the XPS2. While the Gen 2 looks cool it has hit the wall as far as upgradability. You can get a 7800..or the topped out Dothan...

With the 1705 you can upgrade from the Yonah to the Memron & upgrade your vid card quite a bit, with even more options looming on the horizon...

...Add to that you are choosing between a single core/dual core processor

....I think the choice quickly becomes clear

I think you can drop the 7900 Go GTX 512 in the 1705, so I would go with that.

Some reasoning will be really helpful. I am personally thinking about the 1705 too and if down the road I can throw the 7900 GTX in there without much modding that will be really nice. The only thing that is stopping me from ordering one right now is the TAX ... its a killer !

I bought both of my laptops, new off of Ebay, both with 3 yr complete-care Business Class service for thousands cheaper than on the Dell site..Not to mention-No tax. Both of them were Ordered from dell the date my purchase was completed so I did not lose any warranty days. Just transferred the coverage over to me the second I got it.

...If you are intereseted in that method I can refer you to the company that sold me the laptops.
