If I identify my heat, I get a free GFX upgrade! So what's the heat from?

Well...

After hours worth of phonecalls, a Dell Customer Care manager spoke to me. She flat out said "Let us take your card in and test if the heat is caused by the graphics card or something else. If it's the graphics card, we'll replace it, and upgrade it free of cost to the 7900GS."

My specs -
T2600, 512MB 553Mhz, 100GB 7200RPM, GeForce 7800GO Revolution 1 (the one that DID have the heating issues).

So if it turns out that the graphics card is causing the heat, then they'll gimme a free ugprade to the 7900GS. But now im skeptical. The heat is usually around the right top of the keyboard, spanning to the left all the way to the label "INSPIRON 9400". I can also feel the heat below on the palmrests sometimes. Is that the hard drive or the graphics card?

Please say graphics card!!

The heat that spans from the right top to the left top is your vid card most likely. Your heat from the palmrest, if it's the right one, is the HD.

This is, of course if the M170 has the same layout as the 9400, which I think it does for the most part, where it counts anyway.

sounds like its your gpu. when is the last time you took it apart and cleand all the heat sink fins? you would be suprised how quickly crap gets built up inside there, which causes the tempature to rise. might want to try as5ing your gpu and cpu, but it sounds like you would rather have the free upgrade, i dont blame you for that at all. just pull it and send it in and i doubt they will even check it, but then you will be without a computer for the 2 months dell is messing around...

5 days is what she said!

I hope they dont check. But she clearly said that they'll take it away for checking. I usually feel the heat along the back right vent (the vent on the right side being the vent on the side where the Insert and Delete keys are). Im guessing that's the video card then??

well the gpu is located right under the d key and the heat tube goes to the left fan. it all depends how dirty it is inside, but i hope your gpu is at fault, and you get that upgrade, that would be sweet

oh, and 5 days is optimistic, it is possible but you need to prepare yourself for a longer wait, dell is sometimes unreliable when it comes to warranty work. they sometimes are really good about it, but in my experience, the drop the ball because of all the various sections within dell, things get screwed up when they go through 20 hands

They're sending it to a place called "Renaissance computers", here, about 20 km from me. I know the place, I had my old Asus laptop sent there for repairs earlier. So it's not far or anything.

But you say the GPU is below the D key So then it cant be the GPU?

Damn, im gonna look out for where it get's hot now. *cross my fingers it's the GPU!!*

well, on the 9300 chasis its on the left side top.
i could be completely wrong?
well, if its not going to dell, you have a good chance of getting it quick.
how hot does it get?
and once more, have you cleaned it out? my bro is crazy about cleaning my old 9300 i traded him, and he takes it apart and cleans it about every 2 weeks.
i dont clean well, but if i see my temp rise, i will pull my xps apart and clean it then.

I thought it was the upper right, not left? I know the GPU fan is also on the right side, if you're facing the screen.

I was actually looking at the service manual for the 6000 yesterday, and that gpu seems to be more in the middle of the computer.

When you say it gets hot, are you measuring exact temps? If so, how hot is "hot"?

Or is it simply "This thing feels too hot"?
