I opened a service ticket with dell italy for the same issue.. I was complaining about the extreme heat generated from the gpu.. the dell tech rep told me to get temp readings with some software (I forgot the name, notebook something..) and to send in the results.. IF they see that the temps are out of specs, they'll replace the card WITH THE SAME TYPE.. ie, I'll get another 7800... He told me under no circumpstances they're allowed to replace it with a different type of cards.. it makes sense since the 7800 IS designed to go in the 9400, even with the heat issues.. they're certified by dell and that is what i'd get if i wanted to replace it.. so I kinda given up on it... if you can get a 7900 for free kudos to you, but I suspect the dell rep you were talking with just told you what you wanted to hear to get rid of you.. I doubt that the service dept will think the same way... I suspect if you have a faulty gpu you'll get another 7800.. if not... lucky you..

cool, just thinking they will open it up and blow it out and it will run cool so they will just send it back, but i doubt they would do that, im sure they work on comission and if they dont replace it they will make less money. go for it

i would like to know that too, install fangui and check the temp

I also have the same problem. If you want to check your tempature and make sure Dell acknowledge the 7800 heat issues, use the Nvidia tempature monitor and tell them it idels at 80C and exasberate the issue by letting them know it is doing nothing. Do not use fangui because is not supported by Dell. I was planning on weasle my way into a upgrade, but because I am going on vaction to Taiwan from US, I am forced to hold back until August. Tell how your adventure goes!! good luck.

I always thought that opening up your laptop voided warranty...? Ha that musta been awhile ago! That, or Dell is nicer about it and lets us open stuff up. Although that crappy old compaq laptop I had a long time ago still was fixed even after I popped it open and lost a few screws....

no voiding the warranty, dell has sent me lcd's, and a gpu and i replaced them myself.

It is the GPU for sure. You still have the Rev I, which many people reported as idling at high temps. Try contacting them again, send them the temperature readings from the GPU and try asking Dell to send you the Video Card so you can replace it by yourself instead of sending your laptop to them. Explain them that you can't wait that long because you "need" your laptop (laptop for work as an excuse, and that you are going to loose too much or your boss is going to hang you if you are to miss one day without your laptop) YMMV, and I hope that you get the 7900 GS

As you can see, I've only got Firefox open. And, by "hot" I mean it feels hot, sometimes too hot to keep on my lap!

man, 77 is WELL within the tolerance level (see the 93 max in there) so I seriously doubt Dell will replace you with a 7900.. more than likely you have your 2D frequencies set high/dusty fan exausts/some process tying the gpu... just for the records, what are your frequencies set at? but hey, go ahead and give it a try..

It IS high when all im doing is surfing the web.

Yknow, it's hot to touch right now, I've got it on my lap, but im wearing a really thick pair of pants, so it doesnt feel that hot. But if I keep my hand on the right vent, I have to move it away after a few seconds, too hot.

..maybe you have a faulty gpu fan.. does it turn on at all at those temp? (and yes, I know 77 IS hot... I'm just saying what dell will use to probably argue you with..)
Wow, is THAT too hot? I contacted Dell because my GPU was idling at 83 (yes, 83) degrees, and asked them if I could get a free upgrade. They said like NO WAY DUDE, you'll have to live with it! or get a new 7800 go card.

They dont usually offer free upgrades. I was speaking to the manager because of the shit that happened earlire with her. So that's why Im getting a free upgrade.

Oh and, once I get this upgrade, I'll tell you guys my service tag or something, and you can by all means tell your rep that I got a free upgrade and therefore you want one too.

Ive been dealing with dell canada, in my experience they'll only replace parts, and wont upgrade (props if you got the manager to make an exception). I was trying to exchange my 7800 go for a 7900gs and pay the differnce, the CS rep said no, but I could return the 7800 for a $350 refund and buy the gs seperatly, then I talked to spare parts and they said that "its not consumer upgradable" in other words it would void the warrenty and thus they wouldnt accept it for a refund.

In the end, instead of returning it for $350, i'm getting $350 credited back to my card, and i get to keep the 7800!

kudos to you too... here in italy, i ordered 2 9400 with the 7800go on the 27th of feb, had to wait until the 16th of april to get it and they sent it with the 7800go and NOTHING else.. not even a thank you note for waiting so long... i've tried all i could to get some upgrades, but my specs were already maxed out.. I didn't even get an extended warranty beyond the standard 1 year.. and get this.. I couldn't even return then damn machines because I bought them as a small business (which is not entitled to a refund over here..).. You guys have all the luck, believe me..
