Laptop Placement Question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I was just wondering...is it ok to put your laptop on your bed sheets while its running? My laptop gets hot, but doesn't feel any hotter than if I was using it on my lap, the reason I put it on my bed is if I leave an away msg on AIM for the night or something because I don't have a desk in my room right now and I just use my laptop while laying on my bed. Thanks!

I don't know about your particular model, but if it has cooling fan intakes on the bottom of the case I would avoid putting it on anything that restricts the airflow.

Yeah it's fine. Just keep an eye on the temperature. Test it out by leaving the laptop for an hour or two till the temps stabilize and see how high the CPU, GPU and HD temps get. If the CPU/GPU are under 80C and HD under 55-60C than no harm done.

I agree with cka here as a general rule, but if you're A) working off of battery and B) have power settings so that cpu/gpu are throttled down (not working as hard, thus not generating as much heat), then you should be ok. But keep in mind that those vents are there for a reason... Maybe look into getting some kind of lap desk or even some rigid surface to place the laptop on (binder, folder, piece of wood, textbook, etc). That would be an ideal solution.

I've recently resorted to putting my laptop on Whiteboard I had lying arround....problem solved for me.

Do not restrict the air flow. Again, do not. Even if you keep your eyes on the temperature, you ARE going to forget... maybe today, maybe tomorrow.
