S96J Some Questions - Page 2

Also, you may want to check out the thread in Notebook General about the Compal competitor to the S96J and make sure you don't want to wait. I can't see why you'd choose Compal over Asus all else being equal, but there are some cosmestic differences and the inputs and outputs are in different positions. For me, the Asus still wins (plus its available), but you should be aware of other options.

Intel also has a page for driver downloads for this barebones.....just search there for S96J and see what info they offer. It look like Z96J drivers will also, for now, work, and you can get them from Asus. So, there are several sources for drivers.
Hey if you can, is it possible that you may provide a link to where the wireless cards needed are on newegg? I searched but I cant seem to find what im looking for, either that or I dont know what im looking for lol. But thanks, you and everyone else have been really helpful with this. Oh and one last thing it takes SATA HDD's or ATA-6 HDD's? Im trying to confirm this, thx. That the only thing confusing me for now.

alright seems good

thx

You could also get the 3945 wireless card from MWave.com Btw, a very reliable dealer! Got my S96J from them....
Well it's cheaper at Ewiz and they're plenty reliable .....plus MWave doesn't carry the SATA Hitachi 7K100 drives and Ewiz does so, if that's your drive of choice (gonna be that or the Seagate Momentus if you want 7200 and 100GB) then you can save a bit on shipping.

Also after you finish installing all the parts what do you do?

Put the battery on, then plug it in, what to do next? When and how do you install the OS?

This is what I plan on getting off mwave

ASUS S96J $957.00 ~ mwave.com
-Includes CPU T2400
-Intel 3945AGM Wireless LAN
-DVD-RW Drive
-MS Windows XP Home
-Shipping Included
-Not Assembled, Shipped As Parts

The HD off newegg
  • SAMSUNG SpinPoint M40 Series HM080JI 80GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Notebook Hard Drive $84.99
The RAM off newegg
  • G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $81.99
Turns out mwave has XP home for $10 cheaper than newegg, as well as the T2400 which is about $30 cheaper.

Oh and who provides the warranty for it??????????????
The warranty for the laptop is from Intel (Heard that they bumped it up to 2 years now)....Rest of the stuff must be warranteed by manufacturer....

Regarding install, press F2 to get into the BIOS and choose boot from CD/DVD....pop in the XP Home into the DVD drive and then once you get the "Press any key...", press any key :P

That should help get you started

Watch out because the DVD drive may not have mounting brackets that work with it. Check the other posts in my review in the review section.

What would you have to do if it didnt have the mounting brackets?
I managed to fit mine using 2 screws from an old Dell that was lying around...didn't need any bracket....flipcody also had the same problem...Maybe he fixed it now....You can ask....

any ideas?

in any case im going to go for the CD and DVD burning drive?

Also will I need thermal paste (AS5, AS7,etc.) when I install the CPU and stuff?

Or does it come with it alredy?
It comes with thermal compound already on the heatsink assembly for the CPU. The GPU, I don't think so. So you'll need a tube of AS5 or Shin Etsu.

rgr, thx

how about the drive bracket? That it may come loose?

Sorry if Im driving you guys crazy lol

But really, thank you, lots

You really need to buy the optical drive with the barebones. Trust me. The brackets can not be bought seperately. I raised hell and got no where. When you order notebook I would also call them and get assurance that drive shipping with it does have brackets and screws.

If you do not have brackets the drive might fall out and it definately makes more noise when it is not secure. The additional noise played a bigger part in my buying one than it not being secure.

That was my probelm with MWave, they aren't a notebook specialist reseller, they sell computer components enmass and getting an answer, let alone a correct one, might be difficult.

I've built about a hundred computers the past 5 years and I've bought a lot from MWave, so I like them as a store, but when it came time to pick up a notebook, I was going with one of the smaller dealers that specialize in notebooks. For example, I stripped the screws that hold down the mini pci-e card before even getting them loose. I can't imagine trying to get these screws from a place like MWave or even Newegg or directly from Asus. There would assuredly have been weeks if not months of e-mail correspondence and phone conversations with bewildered CSRs and probably a handful of incorrect shipments before getting ahold of them. With GenTech, there were two private messages within a few hours clarifying exactly which ones I needed and they arrived a couple days later.

Okay, well then I'll look into Gentech into getting my S96J, its not much of a price difference anyways. Thanks!

I just recieved my s96j from mwave and the dvdrw drive did come with the correct brackets, which may be a change from their earlier shipments. Another important thing to note is that having no screws or brackets is not a huge problem. I've tested and the drive definitely holds in there pretty tight without them. You must open the drive and tug on the tray to get it out.
