5720 Wireless pointers

Thread Starter
I have a linksys router wrt54g (no speed booster) costed me $90 i got it in a rush, big mistake on my part.

Now as you know alot of you have problems with the wireless I am one of those people now (not at first)

Im sitting in my living room, off my router i kept getting disconnected, now I connected to my neighbors router witch is wgt624v3. I havn't gotten one disconnect in an hour. It's netgear could that have something to do with it?

Coincidence? Any thoughts by people who are more experinced in networking? I know computers but one thing I do not know well is networking.

I heard about the new card soultion Im just looking for ways around it since I do not have the cash to put out right now.

Edit: ALSO when i try to update the firmware on my router (Even when connected through internet) I get an error.

LINKSYS SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS! I just sold my 125.00 WRT55AG dual band piece of crap. I upgraded the wireless card to the new atheros super a/g 108mbs card combined with the Aries2 Super A/G wireless access point. If you are going to buy "off the shelf" equipment, get netgear. They have atheros chipsets in them, but "off the shelf" transmit power.

Try this

One thing to try if you continually get disconnected is to go into the control panel of the wireless router or AP and set the TX speed to match the speed of your card. For some reason setting the speed, versus allowing the device to auto-detect the speed of the card and adjust accordingly, solves a lot of frequent disconnect problems.

If that does not work, before you return the router, check their website and see if you have the latest firmware. You have to update the firmware while connected via wire to the router.

Updating the firmware of a router is one of those things that should do only if it isn't working correctly. Sometimes updating the firmware causes problems that were not present before. I updated the firmware on my D-Link DI-624 and all of a sudden I had problems galore. I reflashed the firmware with the same results. Then I flashed it back to the firmware I had before and all of my problems resolved themselves. D-Link and I concluded that some of the problems may have been caused by my 2.4 GHz telephone system, as there is a phone in nearly every room of the house. One of their techies (that actually souned like he knew more about wireless networking than I do) said part of their latest firmware update changed something (I forget what) that seemed to compete with 2.4 GHz telephones.

I agree with the poster above me that recommends Netgear for off-the-shelf. My younger brother swears by that brand, while I swear by D-Link products. I won't even tell you about my horrible experience with the Linksys wireless equipment that I tried to use for my first wireless network. Needless to say, that junk went back in less than a week.

Good luck!

Will
