i was told specifically(by 3 different agents.. 2 on the phoen and 1 via email)

that you msot certainly CAN have 2 harddrives AND the DVD drive all in the laptop at once....

however you can ONLY do this if it is plugged in with the power source and no battery in.

Yes that is what he said 2 smart bays 1 for thehard drive and 1 for the burner, and then the other hard drive is physically installed, not in a smart bay that can be removed

eeer. but those of us who have their nice nice area51m in our hands, which means we can study their layout and blah blah, know that that is not possible. you can NOT have 2 harddrives and the dvd all at once.
primary harddrive is in it´s own space, under the computer.
other than that the computer have one multibay, and nothing else...

Pics to prove it!

This is correct here are the pics to prove it!

This is where your hard drive goes! There is no other place accept if you take out teh DVDRW and add a second one!

This is where your DVDRW goes these are the only 2 places to put optical or hard drives.

This pretty much totally takes Alienware out of the running for my money. I'd given up when prices got jacked in December, but held out in the slim hopes of finding a used one for a decent price. Now that I learn that you can't have 2 HDs, a DVD drive & a battery installed at the same time makes the AW machine seem like too little for too much.

Really is too bad they can't make room for all of the above. Such nice machines, too. Ah, well. Not for me, I guess.

*shrugs*

I have to ask, why do you need 2 HDs, a DVD, and a battery installed at the same time?

WOW, blantatly lied to, i may cancel my order today on principal.

this is copied, and not taken out of context, directly from the AW e-mail:

"In regards to your question indeed you can have two hard drives and a
CD/DVD-RW unit working at the same time inside your mobile system only
if the computer is plugged in to a power source"

maybe i missed somehting???

i dont need the battery, dvd and 2 hd's but the dvd and 2 HD's would be nice...

or even the battery and 2 HD's.

whats the point of having the second hard drive if you cant use it unless your plugged in?

doesnt seem like much of a mobile system, even for a desktop replacement

You can have 2HD's and the battery!

You can have 1 Optical drive and 1 HD or 2HD's you can replace the DVDRW with a HD!

The battery stays where it is at you cant put anything there but a battery!

I don't see any reason why you would have to be pluged in to used it it would act just like the Optical drive does now!

dont really mind that much, but i dont liek being lied to id liek to know what i am paying for isntead of getting suprises when it come sin the mail.

I wonder if my wife is hot swappable?

Hotswapping the HD and DVD burner / player.

I have tried to hot swap the DVD drive and extra HD several times. It doesn't always work. Sometimes my A51m hangs up for a LONG time. Sometimes, after swapping the DVD for the HD my A51m still thinks there is a DVD player in the computer. If you click on DVD icon (even though there is really a HD in there) nothing happens. I don't use my DVD burner that much. So I just leave my HD in there. If I need to burn a DVD or watch a movie then I just turn my computer off then exchange the HD with the DVD and turn it back on. I don't want my computer hanging up on me when I am working on something important so I just don't hot swap the DVD and HD while the computer is on. Kinda sad because I can hot swap my CD burner and battery with no problems (ever) on my Dell.

Sometimes I can hot swap and sometimes my system just hangs. Therefore I don't do it anymore.

Here is some info on thier site but still does not say Hot swapable!

http://www.alienware.com/system_page...obile/hdd.aspx

Oh wait if you go in anc configure one and click learn more on the bar that says addtional storage sure enought it says this drive is not hot swapable!

Hmm thats odd!

Maybe they were talking about their wives. Does AW employ swingers?

What in the world is the point of having two internal hard drives in a laptop? The power draw would be unacceptabel, and the added heat, why? Get a desktop for heavens sake if you want that much storage, hell get an external USB or Firewaire drive they are cheaper than a 2.5" drive anyway!

If you running out of space on your portable, try the key marked "delete" on your keyboard.
