College Laptop

Thread Starter
I need to get a laptop for college. I have been looking extensively into the apple Macbook, and I like what i see, but my dad is skeptical. In general, i want something with:
at least 1.83 GHz duo core processer
~100 GB of hard drive space
at least 1 GB or RAM
around 5 lbs (i need to be able to carry it conveniently)
2+ USB
internal internet connection
at least 64 MB graphics
3.5+ hours battery life

please help me. In my opinion, the macbook looks really appealing to me, especially with the specs that i am looking for, but my college is PC based (like all other colleges), and while that doesnt bother me (intel chip), my dad if flipping out about the lack of tech support within my college network. he just doesnt seem to get it. so i need to look into other possible options similar in spcification to the MAcbook. thanks

mac, dell, asus, pretty much fits your needs. a 14 or 15.4 inch is another thing you have to decide on

What is your budget? Do you plan on gaming on it and if so what games?

at this point, i just want to see what my options in all areas are. so i have no real budget, even though i will at some point. In reference to the gaming, i doubt i will be gaming at all, because i am going to be a biology/ pre-med major, which will promptly consume every waking minute of my spare time.

I just graduated from being a biology major. Yes it will eat all of your time. Especially anatomy and histology and microbiology and genetics and molecular biology and biochemistry and organic chemistry and....you get the idea.

Heh, at around 5lbs, I think 14" may be his only choice.

The 2 laptops that come to my mind is the Asus Z62F and the MSI MS-1022 (see my sig)

They're both 14" widescreen laptop weighing aroung 5lbs and they're pretty inexpensive, decent configurations around $11-$1300. The MSI can even do some gaming.

I've heard good things about the build quality of Asus and I'd vouch for the same on the MSI I got.

Oh, if you're really strapped for cash, you could get an Acer. The Travelmate 2423WXCi is another 14" screen laptop running about 5lbs. It runs about $700 and is definitely usable. Since gaming isn't an issue, the Intel integrated graphics should be adequate for your needs.
I've heard people really put down Acer laptops but I find this one to be decent. Nothing especially great about it, but definitely the equal of Dell in terms of build quality.

I think the macbook could be a good choice for you. I just played with one at the apple store, and that is one sexy laptop. With its sleek design, good looking screen, very good keyboard, good build quality, fast performance, and a good size for carrying around, I think it would make a great laptop for a student.

I don't think your dad should worry about the mac thing. Unless he knows specifically that there won't be much mac support at your school, you should check it out yourself. With the introduction of the intel chips and bootcamp, all the tech nerds will be getting macs, and I bet you won't have much problems with support.

For other laptops, I'll throw in some lenovos.
Lenovo 3000 n100 - 06892BU
Core duo 1.83ghz, 512mb, 100gb harddrive14" 1280x800, 5.6lbs, dvd burner, wireless, bluetooth, 4 usb
$1099

or a 14" t60. The lenovo site seems to be down right now, maybe they're updating their inventory.

the macbooks and macbook pros get vey hot, so i would go with like the asus w3j, or if you aren't going to be gaming the dell xps 1210. It has a 12" screen up to 2.16 ghz core duo Here it is http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs and heres a review of it http://www.notebookreview.com/defaul...S+M1210+Review hope this helps and have time in college!

thanks for all the suggestions. now i just want all of the computers that you guys are recommending! Thanks for the tip about academic discount! i already knew about student discounts, but its still good to know.

Also, does anyone have an approximate idea when the turion duo core is coming out? and what is significantly better about it than intel's chip?
turion dual core core is coming out within next week or so. why it's better it 64 bit processing and dual core (making it process data even faster), better value (money to performance wise)
your thinking about an AMD laptop? I'm not sure about the turion duo core laptop, but the AMD laptops have less battery life than the Intel centrino laptops. Just my 2 cents... I would recommend an ASUS brand laptop. I am very happy with the one I have (See sig.) and if you have questions you can ask Sasha of C9tech (very helpful dude... tell him I sent ya ). I have heard though from my co-worker,(his wife is getting a PhD in Bio-something) that they use mostly mac's because of the graphic capabilites.
