Oh shite I'm kinda scared. My dongle that ejects the PCMCIA card broke and so I got on Dell Chat and they are sending me a new one along with a technician?!? Will it be bad when he sees that I painted the back hood of my laptop or opens it up to find that there is AS5 all over the heat pipe of my 6800 go? What should I do? I'm almost positive that I'm capable of putting it in myself my only concern is lack of proper tools. Help!!

What kind of help do you want from us? I'll start repainting the back hood and remove the AS5 from your GPU, alright?

Seriously, I wouldn't stress over it though.

I was a DCSE (let my certs lapse in April) and I doubt I would have cared. I wish I still had them as I work for a reseller and could have basically performed my own maintenace. But I would have to pay the 149 out of pocket. Oh well, I should be able to get the hook up from one of the techs anyways (I do software stuff almost exclusively now).

Now if you have to send it into the depot, that's a different story....they will care.

Dell "techs" are often time contract technicians from a local computer shop. I was an HP certified tech for years and when someone with an HP had a problem, HP would call us, pay us 2 hours of labor, send us the parts and we would go perform the install/swap out. I never cared what people did as far as customization, or said anything about voided warranties. I was being paid to do a certain job, and I did it. I wouldn't sweat about it.

Yea, these guys are really just there do there job. Now if the part they were fixing was directly related to what was modified, they might refuse to to the service, not really sure though.

My DCSE expires in about five months, but I only used it for one month for employment. When I was fixing Dell machines, I didn't even blink if something was odd. Sometimes I would be tempted to use an oxygen mask and nitrile gloves when working on machines that were around smokers (nasty smells, tar inside the machine), but I don't recall ever making any record of customer modifications or goofs. The less I had to try to explain to the folks in India every day, the easier my job was.

I don't care what mods you've done to it so long as the mods you did to it didn't cause the problem. In fact we aren't' really the warranty police either. We just replace the parts we're sent and call Dell if we need additional ones.

Striph, I've met some FSR's whom I'll admit seemed a few bricks shy of a load, but I do resent your use of quotes when referring to Dell field techs in general. I'm also no contract worker from a local shop. I'm actually employed by a national service company that does the lion's share of Dell's warranty work, as well as IBM, Hughes, Apple, Sony, and a bit of HP stuff. I'd be more specific as to whom my employer is, but with employers policing their workers' behavior outside working hours I won't.

The technician wont care, as long as you treat them right.

Wouldn't go thát far...

As a former 'contract' technician for CompUSA, HP, etc... you would be suprised how far being nice to a technician can go...

I would go much further out of my way to help somebody who was nice (offered a drink or something especially if it is hot outside or no a/c inside) than somebody who thought I cared at all about their problems and actually worked for the companies whose products I was servicing and complained to me.

I have had a few screen replacements. I was caught up in the great sparkle debate of Spring 05'. Anyways, I have delt with two technicians and have been somewhat hesitant to use them again. I have found that they are qualified and knowledgable; but, they tend to be a little careless with your computer. Both times the technicians broke or scratched something. This was totally fixed by Dell, but it was just a pain in the old butt. After all of this I decided to put in my own GPU upgrade. It was a ton of fun and I enjoyed learning something about my computer. If you can, try to fix / upgrade your computer without relying on technicians. If you feel uncomfortable with the scope of the upgrade / repair, then call a technician. Either way you will be happy.

Complete Care Rocks!
