Are Travelstar Notebook HDDs known to go bad?

I "dabble" in older Ebay & yard sale laptops and components, and I've had about 12 or so extra hard drives (laptop drives). They've ranged from 6GB to 40GB, and so far, the only three problem drives that I could not use were Travelstar drives. (I've had more of them that do work fine, btw.)
All 3 just sit and click. Well, one will try to boot Windows 2KPro for a fews seconds before it begins clicking.

Then there's this; two will run without clicking and allow me to write to them if I put them in an enclosure.
Is this just a matter of current?

I don't know. I have two travelstars, one is a 2 yrs old 60gb 7k60 and the other is a 30gb 4k40, 3 yrs. old. No problems for now. Btw, I don't see travelstars failing on people.

Just looked at my old dead HDD from the comp i am on now and low and behold it is a travelstar......

I'm glad that i think the seagate is coming in my new m1710.

This is sad, were these drives that bad back when IBM still owned them or did it go to heck when hitachi took over?

Also that clicking noise you describe is what my drive made in the week while it destroted the read head and platters....before coming unbootable. Thank god for recent backup.

Is the USB port introducing more current to my external enclosure than the internal hard drive slot?
There's nothing wrong with the notebooks when I stick in a Samsung HDD.

Well if anyone remembers IBM's deskstars, which later earned the name "deathstar" because they all died. Mabie that has something to do with it. IDK.

all of IBM' s hard drive lines were bought out by Hatachi, but The designs and technology that IBM created still might be in prouduction. Just under a different name
