Back up help required on 8204

I need to send my 8204 to Acer service repair to get the CD/DVD drive sorted out and I've been told by them that I need to do the back up before I give my 8204 to them for repair.

Can someone help me please by giving me the instructions on how to do the back up everything - step by step - in simple English for me to understand so I have drivers, data, emails, etc all backed up? And how to put all that back again when I get my 8204 back from them?

Also, does anyone know if I will need to do a reinstall on the XP once the laptop is back from the Acer service repair?

Thanks a lot!

Hi, since no-one did respond yet, I'll give it a try (being put off fist by your 'plain English' condition).

First of all, if the DVD is not working anymore, I don't see how you can do an easy backup (it would require taking out the HD,which may affect warranty).
So I assume the DVD is still working.

You could try running eRecovey (if you still have it installed). If it works you should be able to backup your system.

If your system came with the light version of NTI backup you can use that to selectively backup your data files.
This would include:
- everything you put on your D-drive
- your my documents
- your email in:
Documents and Settings\your login here\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
- and any data directories on your C-drive.

I wouldn't bother too much about the whole system backup, since Acer will return your laptop with a re-install (if needed). So maybe you can copy the most important files (if necessary after zipping them) to floppy or USB stick and transfer them to another machine temporarily.

Hope this is helpful

Cheers

...or if you've got a friend with a computer and some spare space, dump everything out across the LAN to their hard drive (just make sure you trust them or your passwords are obscured).

Or buy a USB hard drive and back up to that, or sign up with an online backup service and use it, or some combination of the above.

Would indeed be much easier, but if we had friends we wouldn't spend our time on the forums would we?

I'm figuring we either have friends, or we're geeky enough to have multiple computers.

I won't say which is applicable to me.

Drio, first all, I would like to thank you for all your help on this matter. It is much appreciated and I'm glad that "plain English" condition did not put you off.
I only said that because I'm not too familiar with all these technical terms or abbreviations yet but I'm learning very slowly. You just don't know how glad I was to know that there's someone in this forum who is kind and considerate enough to help me out with this little problem.

As for having friends, I certainly agree with you there. One could always see it another way, we can also make friends here too and that makes it unique. Geeky or not. It's not that I don't have friends who are into all this. I just feel bad that every time something goes wrong, I need to call on them. I just like to leave them alone now and then.....don't want to spoil the friendship by taking full advantage of it. Plus I get tired of asking them all the time. I know I'm in this forum to look and learn from other people's experiences with their 8204.....and maybe make friends too...hahaha.

By the way, you assumed correctly, my CD/DVD drive is still working. It's going for repair because it makes a really annoying rattling sound every time I use it and Acer support/repair is kind enough to acknowledge there's a problem with it. I just hope they're not going to damage my precious 8204 (everything else is perfect except the drive) while doing the repair and/or whatever they do with it.

Once again, thanks a lot and I'll let you know what the outcome of this when it's returned if you're interested.
