Portfolio design with integrated carry handle
Weighs only 18 pounds

...Does it come with a back brace?

I would find myself hard-pressedd to consider anything that wieghed 18 LBS a laptop. Maybe a portable desktop, but there is no way that thing can sit on my lap. HEck I would need at least 2 laps for that...and for it's price (gotta love dell for their insane pricing/coupon structure) I ocould go out and get something considerably better ($5,000+ for their model without all the bells & whistles+ tax) ...I could build a monster & buy me a little laptop for mobile needs.

...150w power brick. erg I tihnk the XPS brick is big enough already lol

...But on a design note the thing looks sweet...but even with an integrated carrying handle it still doesn't "move" me that much...And really, would you want to carry it around like that and get it all banged up..? what happens when it falls over (we all know briefcases never do that)...I dunno...cool idea, but just not really practical until they get the weight to below 15LBS...Under 10 if they can

Nobody's pressing you. Nobody ever said that this is a laptop.

Dell business just sent out 35% off exclusive coupons that expire 5/30 for laptops. They exclude the m1710 but include the m2010 (qualifies as a laptop). Fully loaded, the coupon takes over $1,500 off the price bringing it down to ~$3,000 which includes 2 gigs ram, 2 100 gig 7200 rpm hard drives running in raid, that 20" beast of a WSXGA+ Wide Screen LCD panel, Creative integrated sound, Intel® Core® T2600 Duo Processor @ 2.16GHz, and most importantly, a 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1800 video card. (this is a bad thing?) Good deal or what?

..Pirx your sarcastic respose is most impressive, however Dell does consider this a notebook computer & presses upon it's portability (hense the hadle they decided to build into the notebook) They are not pushing it as a DTR...And regarding the portable desktop responce...Well, that is a paradox isn't it..Is it a desktop or is it a notebook computer. It's both & neither.

condidering the m1710 is more powerful, more portable & has more than enough capability to run a presentation I really don't see the point in this machine ...besides the point it looks cool

...at least until your friend says, hey can I hold it & ends up in the hospital

Why the x1800, the 7900 go gtx is so much better
post #10 of 24
The Specs are awful, I wonder how upgradeable it is. ANd by awful I mean the fact that it's 4000 up to 8000 Dollars? I'm surprised Dell is doing this, and not Sony. This seems to be something that Sony would do.

Can you show me where they say anything of that sort? The fact that it is listed in the notebook section of their website means nothing; clearly, this machine does not fit exactly into any of the previous categories.

Sure it is portable. Doesn't mean it is a laptop or notebook computer. It obviously isn't, see above.

It's a mobile desktop.

Well, it does have a larger screen, which is indeed of interest in some scenarios; but otherwise, I do agree with some of your sentiments of disappointment: Given that this is a significantly larger package, there is no reason why they could not have equipped this machine with the same level of power that the M1710 has.

20.1-inch 1680 x 1050 BAH!!!!
Yeah right now i would reccomend the M1710 over this

And hauling 18lbs around, isnt going to be a success.

In my opinion, Dell screwed this up with specs.
But the M1710, m1210, and XPS 700 are just great
post #14 of 24
I agree the specs are not what they should be for that price, but on the 18lb issue.. how far do you people carry your notebooks. Honestly, 18lbs for a full 20" monitor and machine doesn't seem that bad. Unless maybe I mist masses of people going jogging with their notebooks. I'm guessing its more like, carry out of house/apartment, get in car, drive somewhere, carry into house/apartment/office. I can't imagine this would work well for a sales person or the like who is mobile most of the time though. In conclusion, if you have troubles or you need a backbrace to carry an 18lb object, that has a handle and is made to carry no less, then you are in serious need of some exercise or a surgery. Pardon to any one with a legitimate disability of course.

but who the hell would buy a 20 inch notebook, think about it.

It could use some spec improvements...right now, im not happy with it
post #16 of 24
oh, I agree with the specs being crap for the cost.. just saying, people still carry around heavy mini towers plus monitors, that weigh alot more than 18lbs. If this thing had a 7900gtx and few other tweaks and of course, a significant price drop, it would work well for that crowd. For its size and price, it NEEDs to be better than other XPS models, but it isn't so its kind of pointless.

exactly

SLI option, and WUXGA would be nice

Guys, this "notebook" was showed on the XPS dell website few weeks back.
This "thing" is not the notebook that you carry around campus to type up some notes. This thing is for ppl to carry in car and possibly 1 minute walk to a place where ppl can enjoy the 20 inch screen on a desk or on a nice coffee table. Dell advertised this on the XPS website as a multimedia "thing" few weeks ago.
Did you guys read toms about the review of multimedua notebook and dell promised them something new is coming up to against those toms already tested. It's for multimedia with 8 speakers. They chose ATI because ATI has better multimedia technology for lower cost (that's what I heard). Although this is not mainly for games, 1800 is still able to handle some games as well.

For the price, yeah, it's insane. But that's what it's about. This thing is not for normal $15/hr ppl. It's for ppl that has too much money and wants to enjoy the coolness in front of other rich ppl. I do have a friend that just have too much money and need to find something to spend on after having 3 cars in the garage and 1 car on the drive way, but he only use one car. That's what this aims at and dell also wants to establish high end products image even though they probably are selling only 1000 of this worldwide.

For the next few weeks, we will see dell gets all the attentions about the high end cool products. But are they selling lots of those? probably not.
What they are probably doing is to tell people that Dell is not about CHEAP, or LOW Price. They want to capture high end market and to build trust in quality computers. So people will be even more confident about dell computers. It's like car company (Honda, Toyota, Ferrari, BMW, Benz, ...) dumps billions in F1 forumla race, and they only get recognition out of it. It's not like a honda civic has anything to do with it, maybe not even a S2000. That's marketing.

..... Overall I am and still would stick with my E1705 or even a M1710. The 20 inch screen isn't that attractive when, for the price, I could just get a projector. The only thing I can really see that I'm interested in is the SATA 0. This is a bold move by dell... But at least they're pushing the boundries. Who knows, this might become huge. I think Merom + SLI + the 20 inch (hopefully wuxga) + the rest of the package = Alienware market.
