By the way, does anyone else's webcam look absolutely horrible? I played with it briefly in Windows, and it looked so bad that I wonder if it's broken.

yeah my webcam looks horrible in low light, but looks great in daylight. typical for webcams.

YMMV...but yeah, my webcam looked horrible too... until I realized what an idiot I was and then removed the protective plastic over the camera. It looked much better afterwards

Dont want to start a new thread so il just post here, anyway hope someone can help. I ordered an M1210 from dell uk on the 14th and was supposed to be delivered today but had an e-mail on wednesday saying my order was delayed until the 9th of october and up until this morning the laptop has sat in pre-production but I just recieved an e-mail at 1pm saying my system has dispatched... does anyone have any idea why it went from production to dispatch in just a few hours?

Just purchased:
  • Dell XPS M1210
  • 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo (Merom)
  • 2 GB Ram
  • 256 MB NVIDIA 7400 Geforce Go
  • 60 GB 5400RPM SATA drive (to upgrade later..no choice for 7200RPM @ this time)
  • 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
  • Intel ProWireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card/Blutooth
  • (2) 9-cell 85Whr Batteries
  • Spare AC Adapter
  • 2 yrs Limited Warranty & CompleteCare
  • [no A/V package - except for the EVDO, the webcam seems "gimmicky" to me]

kinda pricey, I know, for all this stuff, but I only purchase about every 4-5 years, so, it feels worth it to me.

I'm not sure I get this. Are you saying that you get the EVDO broadband card but not the A/V package?
I'm sorry for any confusion, SPEEDwithJJ.
What I mean is, and this is my opinion only, that the only part of the AV Package that I would have possibly wanted was the use of the EVDO, but its not something I need, especially with the added cost of connection.

I'm not a big fan of webcams and I already have a couple sets of earbuds and other headsets. The integrated EVDO would have been nice as a future option, but doesn't justify the added cost, at least not for me.

I'm sorry, once again, if this was confusing.
That's a good point, how do you people who got the A/V package feel about it? I'm still not sure if I want it. The webcam sounds cool, but I do have a nice one already, just that it's a pain to whip out and hook onto the top of the screen. I'm not going to use the EVDO.

No problems, moulder. At least now I understand what you mean. Enjoy your M1210.

I got the AV Pack for the EVDO antenna. I'll probably never use the webcam, even if I can get it working under Linux. I may not even bother trying. I think the other benefit is that you get the better screen (AUO I think). It's still not great, but if the other screens are worse than this one, I wouldn't want them. The earbuds are ok-ish, nowhere near high end, but I guess it's nice having an extra/backup set around.
Mine's due tomorrow, with the AV. I know I'd never carry an external webcam around all the time, so the only way I'll use it is if it's built-in. I may want to use the EVDO later, and the "good" screen comes with it. So I sprung.

Thanks SPEEDwithJJ

As for getting the AV package for the "better" AUO screen, from what I've read in the forums here, it seems to be mostly a myth as ppl who didn't order the AV package have gotten the AUO screen.

As long as the screen doesn't have any washout, no-to-minimal lightleakage or dead-pixels, I don't really care if it comes from AUO, Toshiba, LG or Samsung screen. All it needs is to be for me is viewable and have the vibrant colors Dell claims it has with TrueLife.

Hey Steve01S4, let me know how yours works under Linux...I'm going to need to install it myself, either on a separate partition or on a Virtual Server for use with school (compilation portability). I'd like to know your impression of it running on the M1210.

And for those who got the AV package, as long as you are happy with it, I'm happy with it
Rock On!

I just checked my battery for my new M1210 and it's made in Japan. Does that mean it'll have a chance of blowing up?

It's running great on Linux so far. I've got everything working except the webcam (haven't tested it) and EVDO (haven't signed up yet). The card reader works for everything except Memory Stick with the 2.6.18 kernel. The intel wireless was simple to install. It worked right out of the box on the Ubuntu livecd, and in Gentoo all it was easy (by Gentoo standards). Speedstep works, the 7400 works great with the proprietaty nvidia drivers, and battery life (running Xgl, so the video card is being used all the time) is 3:30 with the 6 cell and 5:30 with the 9 cell. With a C2D T7200, compile times are incredibly fast. I've got to say, it's a very Linux-friendly laptop.

I haven't set up suspend yet, though I've installed the software to do it. I'll mess with it tomorrow, but at this point, booting up and shutting down doesnt bother me. I've never used suspend on any OS before, so maybe it'll spoil me.

I did get the 5400rpm hard drive, since Dell was out of 7200s. I'm glad I have the extra disk space, and it doesn't really seem to be much of a bottleneck. That's probably because I was pretty generous in my use of tmpfs, to try to get as many things into ram as possible.

I'm really blown away by the speed of the Merom chips. My main workstation is a dual CPU Opteron 246 setup... 2 processors at 2ghz each, sames as the M1210 has (well, 2 cores at 2ghz). Compiling in ram, to eliminate the Opteron system's 15krpm scsi disk advantage, the M1210 built kernel 2.6.18 in 2:58. The Opteron system built the same kernel in 3:19.

There is a huge difference - yes the toshiba is washed out - and even the auo wont look as good as truelife should - like it looks great on the 710m but not on this machine.

and for the other guy saying that ppl without a/v got auo - that was an exception - i've went through 3 of these exchanged...still no auo..., but when i got a new one w/ a/v I got the auo...

MrSmileyJr, how's your LCD experiment going on? I'm anxiously waiting for you to report your success.
Dang! I didn't get the A/V package. Hopefully my low expectations will keep me from being dissapointed.

I've been very busy lately so I havent done it yet... negotiation w/ dell meanwhile and they're being very annoying .... I might have to dispute the charges w/ my credit card.... but I plan to get it done tommorow. Regarding the swap, I have settled on the auo thats already in there and I don't know if it will be worth the effort to swap w/ my 710m. Apparently there is lots of risk involved - I'm wondering if I dont swap inverters w/ the screen will everything work fine.... there also seem to be multiple versions of teh auo 02 screen that are NOT interchangeable.... so I'm a lil queasy about jsut swapping things, burning something out..... but unless we dont have to swap inverters, I'm thinking i'm not gonna do it...but I'm not really willing to just risk burning something by not swapping the inverters when I swap the screen....

It is possible of course that if we do not swap the inverters, then everything will be fine and there wont be any of those issues with brightness that someone who did do the swap mentioned...

REgardless, I will take apart the machine I have w/ a samsung screen, and if I have to do a screen swap between my new auo machine and the samsung one, I will get pictures of both. I will try to post them within the next couple weeks, as I am totally overworked these days. The only reason I"m doing this now is because my 21 day return is running out so I need to take care of this now..

I'll update u when i can.

All the best - MR :0)
