Obviously the purpose is to generate a reasoned dialog regarding the pros and cons of the two different machines. Surely he wouldn't come here just to troll and stir up Dell enthusiasts.

You forgot MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE? I just ordered a M1210 for a little over $1200. A similarly spec'd SZ would cost around $2000.

I compared both systems and starting from base to get the M1210 to match the Sony Specs it came about $300 Cheaper and weight wise its only .37 pound heavier the carbon fiber is nice but i prefer the overall sturdy chasis a notebook that isnt thin offers with its thick magnesium alloy frame and all. If i wanted thin and small and sexy id get a macbook which also retails for less than the sony.

Yeah, but hardly anyone pays full retail price for Dells. There is almost always some sort of a promotion going on. Sony doesn't give any discounts. You will only pay less when they go on clearance...and even then, you will only get 10-15% off.

The lower model SZ's have magnesium alloy casing like the m1210. The weight difference isn't too much but the m1210 is quite a bit thicker at the front.

Dell XPS support will likely be better, Sony isn't known for good support. Sony batteries are very expensive even compared to Dell retail prices, and there will likely be even cheaper batteries for the m1210 available on ebay after a few months.

The Macbook isn't comparable since it only has integrated graphics.

yeah, you guys that got all of the coupons are lucky..please dont use your "magical prices" to compare..

I am waiting to see an offical review on the 1210..to see if the battery life is good, etc etc

Damn, I just read the review on the M1210 and it's freaking nice. The only downside it's the interior color is silver and I prefer black or dark grey like the Latitude D620-820 has.

Here's the review

From what I can tell from the paper specs here is the advantages of each over the other:

Dell m1210: Cheaper, comes with 1GB RAM on even the cheapest model, TV out, more USB ports.

Sony SZ: Larger screen, lighter, thinner, looks nicer (subjective).

are you kidding? Have you seen any other "ultraportable" laptops where the high capacity battery DOESN'T stick out? The Sony SZ's high capacity battery sticks out about an inch from the back.
yeah..that is very true..the battery sticking out is a small price to pay though

I got both the 6 cell and the 9 cell. I'll use the 9 cell when I'm flying/away from a power jack and a 6 cell around the house.

The extra USB ports are nice on the M1210 as compared to the SZ. In addition, the built-in media reader on the M1210 is a bonus. Don't know if I would use the S-video much, but it is nice to have on the M1210. I'm bummed that the S-video has been dropped from many of the newer laptops. The specs are nearly perfect on the the M1210, but I'm a little concerned about the size of the screen. Right now, I am used to viewing 1024 x 768 on a 19" CRT. I would have to favor the SZ on screen size. Can anyone comment on that?

LCD screens nowadays are crisper and clearer than CRTs are, you would notice the difference..but the quality of the screen is so much better it would not bother you so much

True story. I went from 17" CRT 1024X768 to 20.1" 2005 1680X1050 and thought it might be too small and here i am typing on a 14.1" 1440X900 640m
