Devices not loading when loading Windows XP

I believe this is more likely a problem with windows rather than my Sager hardware, but I want to know if anyone can help me anyways.

As of a couple of days ago my computer will not boot windows correctly. The first thing I noticed was the usually blue Windows XP toolbar loaded white. This would not bother me so much if Windows could detect any of my hardware devices, including sound card, ethernet card etc. Under System information it states that some Windows management files may be corrupt or missing. I've tried messing around with MSConfig to no avail. Does anyone have any solutions before I have to reinstall windows?

Sounds pretty nasty to me. Perhaps a virus of some sort?

I'd say it looks like you're going to have to reformat. Backup all your data before you can't even get to that...

Ohter thoughts

Did you consider doing a system restore?

If that isn't an option, boot to your CD and REPAIR the current install of XP. You should not lose any data files doing a repair or a restore. If you don't back up your data, when you reformat you will definitely lose everything then.

Another thought is to put a different HDD in the system, install XP to it, then connect the old HDD via USB cable and transfer your data files. Once you do that, if you really want the original HDD back in the computer, reformat it via USB. Then swap out the drives and install XP onto the original HDD and transfer the data files via USB again.

On my 2nd HDD I have XP installed just in case something happens to the main HDD. That way I can boot to it and keep on keeping on.

Oh, if you don't plan to keep the replacement HDD in the system, do not activate XP until you have the HDD you plan to keep in the system. If you try to activate XP too many times in to short of a period, you'll have to call in the Microsoft to get the activation done.

Reload the OS from the CD and make sure ya turn off the card reader in the bios before installing. Follow the order of device driver loading in the manual.
