2 gigs to 4 gigs of memory - Page 2

Current wisdom seems to be that 4GB of RAM is totally not worth it at this point, being priced at 2000-3000 USD. If you have money to burn, sure, go ahead, it's your wallet. But Vista and DX10 will not be out for at least another half year (spring 2007 if I rember right? ). By the time you will really feel the difference 2GB DIMMs might become a whole lot cheaper.

I have XPS M170 and I did order with 1G ram, Then after I got this laptop I tested out games and can see it still work good at 1Gb but I upgraded to 2Gb and it show real good performance in it but getting to 4gb would be overkill and waste of monies. Right now most of new games out there are not hitting that high yet or maybe not really sure yet.

I'm with everyone else, 4 gigs is nuts for a laptop. If you really want that much Ram buy a desktop or a server . Or you could buy another lappy with 2 gigs for what it is going to cost you for 4 in your current system.

I wonder where that bullshit about "Vista needs at least 2Gigs, probably more" is coming from.

Sure, Vista will probably use somewhat more memory than XP, meaning that instead of around 100Megs for a plain-vanilla XP installation, you may need 200Megs. So that's 100MB more, and I really do not understand what the big deal is supposed to be. Vista will run just fine with 512MB (which is just about the minimum you can buy a modern machine with anyway these days), and it will be peachy with 1Gig. Whether or not you need more than that depends on your applications. If you insist on running a game that fills a Gig by itself, then, yes, get 2Gigs, but that story is no different from XP.
