3dmark scores for Nickspohn

Nick,

I posted this is an earlier thread:

I just ran both 05 and 06 again on the Dell factory load of XP-Pro and scored 8578 in 3DMark 05 and 4721 in 3DMark 06 with the following configuration:

Precision M90
Quadro FX 2500M 512MB
2.16ghz T2600 processor
2GB DDR2-667 memory
100gb 7200 HDD
WUXGA LCD

As you can see I have the M90 not the 1710 and I also have the T2600 and my scores look to be a few hundred points higher than yours. I have seen a ~100-200 spread from the same system so I wouldn't be too concerned about a few 100 points in this benchmark.

Nick is too concerned about his 3dmark scores.

*goes to overclock a little more to get another 20 3dmark points*

Thats his option , he asked a valid question so I thought I would supply a valid answer.

I would say most people on this forum are too concerned about one thing or another but that doesn't change how helpful the people here tend to be.

Agreed.

For the record, I get ~6400 in 3dmark05 with my machine.

With your M1710?

I get 66XX on my Gen 2...

EDIT: Saw the GS... sorry about that.

I think that was what is typically called a "sarcastic" reply.

I tend to go through the 3dMark "phase" whenever I do a complete upgrade or get a new system. Lasts about a day or so of tweaking then I leave it alone.

It's very good to have real numbers so you can see the impact of your tweaks, but I agree sometimes you can take it a bit far.

Plus, when you spend 3,000 on a machine I can see the importance of proving how much better it is than your last machine. I know for a fact the reason I ordered the M1710 is because the 3dMark05 scores are 2-3x better than my current desktop.

Yeah, I got this as a replacement for an M170. I tried to convince them that the 7900GS is worse than the 7800GTX, but they wouldn't let me have the 7900GTX.

I agree. I can't say that I don't pay any attention to the 3dmark scores; but unless I can't get a good performance in games, I don't worry about it. It is nice to see the direct impact that a tweak or upgrade has though.

alright, this is why i wanted to know

i was just curious if the CPU affected the score, since T2600's have been getting a higher score, but i thought the cpu didnt help 3dmark.

Also the RAM size as well

so thats what i wanted to know..

Well, at least it's upgradeable, even to Merom!

@Yellowlt4: I honestly thought the reason Nick was worried about his benchmarks was because he was getting the same (or nearly the same) scores that you report in your post WHILE OVERCLOCKING to 600/700...this just doesn't make any sense at all from what I *thought* I knew about CPUs and their relative effect on graphics performance, since anyone with a 2.16 is getting ~9700 at these speeds, which is around *1000* points higher than Nick's scores at the SAME 7900 clocks...NOT 100-300pts or something! We were just wanting someone in the other thread to clear up the mystery of whether it's his slow CPU or his low amount of RAM that's holding him back. This can easily be solved by someone demonstrating scores OVER 9000 w/an overclocked 7900 and a 1.86 CPU...also, someone demonstrating scores lower than 9500-9700 @600/700 with a 2.16 CPU and only 1GB of RAM would help (though not as much as the former situation)...

Good job making the separate thread, though, Yellow...the mystery was getting 'buried' in one of the 'standard' overclocking threads, and this is actually pretty interesting...I mean, if no one can beat 9000 with 1.86 and the 7900@600/700, that says A LOT about the power of the Yonah CPU in graphics apps...the differences in benchmarks between the 1.8 and 2.13 Pentium-M, for example, were nowhere NEAR this huge! Just think about what Merom will do for games once they hit even 2.2GHz!

what are you guys getting with the m1710 and the 7900gtx?
I'll be posting mine whenever I get my laptop, hold tight Same config as Nick's.

See above...I also have a thread here that lists my current experimentation with overclocking:

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=154583

So far, with the 2.16 and stock clocks from Dell people get consistently what yellowlt posted at the top of this thread: ~8500...people with 1.86 and stock get a couple hundred lower or so....

However, these 7900's are great overclockers and most 2.16 owners can hit ~9700 with no sweat at all...one guy actually has one getting 9950@625/725 STABLE!

The point of this thread is that while a stock 7900 is not limited by the 1.86 CPU, an overclocked 7900 appears to be: in other words, when nickspohn and others crank up the clockspeeds, their 7900 cards don't appear to scale in terms of performance because the 1.86 CPU can't feed them info fast enough (I guess)...

@Experts: Am I thinking right, here? Is it possible that an o/c 7900GTX is just so powerful that it needs a beefier CPU paired with it to take full advantage of the powerscale? Joker? Sir Meili?

nick, i freaking told you that mobile gpus < desktop. My 7900gt is better than your mobile gtxs.

Lol...duh...of course it's better..,

Er...why are you posting here if you don't have a laptop? Were you specifically lurking to needle the dude about his bloody 3dmark scores? Jeez, that's kinda weird...

RAM and CPU will contribute to the 3dmark score. 3dmark is heavily GPU weighted but system memory and cpu will help.

'Help', yes; but would anyone expect ~1000 points of 'help' from a ~300Mhz increase in CPU speed?
