Merom in M90. Works with E1705 as well...

I got a Merom running in my M90. Picky bastard about RAM. It prefers the Cas 4 533 and so far gaming has been minimally faster. I will post linkies to picks. As for how I got it, I am leaving that alone since I nearly got hammered for it.

Specs of my system:
Precision M90
Merom T7200 Processor @ 2.0 ghz
2 X 1 GB DDR2 PC533 (likes the Cas 4 versus 667 Cas 5. SiSandra reports same memory bandwidth either way so no biggie)
100 GB 7200 SATA
Quadro 2500M 512 Meg (basically 7900 GTX)

As for the E1705 IT DOES WORK. I POPPED IT IN AND WITH THE A00 BIOS IT WORKS. I did not try it with a different bios as Jaxchris mentioned the A01 perhaps killing the merom being recognized.

Stock I am getting 4730 in 06 with this card which is a 100pt improvement over previous benchies. I will run 05 shortly and post benchies of Superpi.

Post any benchies you want. Oh and rep is appreciated

Here is screenshot of my desktop. This processor is great...

Super Pi Dual instances 29 sec and 30 sec respectively.

Single instance was 26 sec.

More will be added...

Very cool.

After I saw your post last week about you buying that memron, I jumped on ebay and saw the other one that guy was selling. I nearly bought it as I have 7,700 dollars sitting in my paypal but .... I'm kinda scared to get THAT tech-heavy with new gear, especially ES cpu's and hardware that may or may not work with it.

Hats off. Took guts to spend that money. A huge gamble that paid off for you.

Do u have a cpuv heavy game to compare, like cs source stress test?

Operaman, any chance you could backup your A00 bios for the E1705 and post it here? Also, would you mind giving A01 a shot with the E1705 as well and see if that works? I know they added in 7900 Go GS support in the A01 for the E1705 so a lot of us with 7900 Go GS cards are going to need merom to work w/that bios.

Thanks and +rep.

It took me about two hours in total to try both systems and time is of the essence right now as I am in the middle of an opera and moving to Germany. The tech bug gets all though doesn;t it? I wanted to make sure it worked in the E1705 and it does. I will do benchies from the M90.

Okay silly question. How the heck do I print screen to where I can blow up just the cpu-z id and post the pic here for people to see? Geez, I feel like a noob. Forgive me but I want to add screenshots to the first post.

Use the prnt screen and then edit the part you want in paint. Save and upload!

OPERMAN, E1705 on your lappy are you using 90W or 130W adaptor?

E1705 I used a 130 watt because I have a modded E1705 with a 7800 GTX. I used the A00 bios. No A01.

As for the M90 A00 as well and obviously a 130 watt with the 7900 GTX.

Make sure you got the A00 bios. Also mine was picky about 667 CAS 5 versus 533 CAS 4.

Pls post the A00 bios for E1705

Operaman, could you backup your A00 bios or provide a link to where it canbe downloaded as Dell has removed the file from their website including their ftp site. Thinking of buying the E1705 if it is upgradeable to Merom with the old A00 bios, many thanks.

Thanks for the great info ..

In the M90 do you have the a01 bios or the a00?

thanks again.

Nick, it's just like putting in any other CPU. Just follow the service manual on Dell's site on how to get to the CPU.

Thanks for clarifying Zimmer. I always forget that I open these up all the time, but a lot of people will be trying this for the first time. And I remember when I did my first notebook (my first computer was a Dell Inpsiron 9100) I was terrified even though I had worked on numerous desktops at that point.

It is really straight forward so do it if you can. I love mine. Oh, and by the by, shamless plug, I got my T2500 up for sale in the FS section so come on over and buy it. It was used less than 2 weeks in this system and is $50 cheaper than anywhere online...
