Just an update changed the ram to pc 5400 all works great thanks to all

A bit worried about the cpu temp tho idle 45-50 load 74-78 way hotter than my old yohan unless the bios is reading it incorrectly

I am curious, is the need for PC2-5400 Ram needed just for the M1710?
As I have a E1705 and my merom T7400 works great using PC2-5300 Ram (A02 bios).
I had all sorts of issues (not booting up until I removed teh bios battery and reset everything) with normal PC2-4200 Ram unitl I upgraded to 2x1gb PC2-5300

PC2-5300 and PC2-5400 are the same thing, manufacturers just name them differently .

Thats basically true... I know that the PC2-5400 has been tested at a slightly higher mhz than PC2-5300 (by about 15-20 mhz) which does not mean anything on a laptop (as there is no real overclocking options by FSB, and the JDEC spec is the same.... 667 speed rating).
But according to the previous posts in this thread, people were saying that the PC2-5300 would not work with their Merom so they had to "upgrade" to PC2-5400 (this was on a M1710)

Now, my E1705 with a Merom works just fine with PC2-5300 so I am trying to figure out if it was a platform or bios issue that kept the M1710 from using PC2-5300

Hope I wasn't too unlear with my question

I personally feel it's a bios issue, the ram that i pulled out of the m1710 was labled PC2-5300S-555-12 which 100% didn't work.
The ram i replaced it with OZC PC2-5400 worked like a charm.
So now the question remains which ram is better the working OZC 5400 or dell's pc2-5300 lol

Yeah, I wanted to call BS on this too. Glad someone beat me to it.

Just because a particular set of modules that happen to be 5300 don't work doesn't make it a 5300 issue.

I think the problem is with the RAM running in dual channel mode, when I boot with two 512MB 533 sticks I get the blank screen, but if I pull one out or swap one with a different type of RAM so it disables dual channel it will boot fine.

Have you tried both sticks in single channel in BOTH sockets to make sure they're both good (4 configurations - stick 1, socket 1; stick 1, socket 2; stick 2, socket 1; stick 2, socket 2)? Do you have another set of DDR2 that you could try in dual channel? It could very well be that one of the memory sockets on your motherboard is flakey, or the RAM is. It's best to test all possibilities to see what you can rule out. Good luck .

OK, I installed a T7400 (stepping 6, rev B2) engineering sample in my E1705 and I am stuck @ 1GHz. I have the A01 bios, which is what the lappy shipped with. I've tried to flash to A02, says it's not supported. Same with A01 (to re-flash), hardware not supported. Haven't tried A00, but a little afraid as I am not sure it supports 7900gs.

I guess I could switch the T2300 back in to try flashing to A03, but that is a major pain without knowing if it works.

Ideas?

uclajd, you need to flash from dos (using a dos boot disk, not cmd prompt) and use the " -forceflash " switch.
This will allow you to flash your bios just fine.

Just type " biosnameA02.exe -forceflash " without the quotes and with your correct bios .exe file name.

Yeah I've tested two different pairs in every configuration, and I know both pairs are good.

Well I can't get it to flash, not with floppy or CD. Guess I'm going to have to pull it and try to flash with Yonah, then put Merom back in. Not that that's a pain or anything.

You can just wait until A03, I'm still using A01.

Someone needs to just make a fairly simple step-by-step and sticky that sob. Here's a quick question though, what kind of performance gains are people getting? I have a Core Duo 2.16 right now, if I get a Core 2 Duo 2.16, we're talking about a good chunk of money... I'm gonna want RESULTS! Or is the only reason for upgrading the fact that you get better overclockability?
