m2105 fan noise and cpu upgrade options

hey all
I have an emachines m2105 after running for a while with just a web browser up the fan kicks on and more or less stays on. not a huge deal but it has this high pitched whine that drives me nuts. i took the thing apart and looked for dust/dirt on the fan but it looked ok, i should pull it apart again and get some canned air to really clean it. however i was also thinking that part of the problem is the celeron 2.8GHZ it has in there. it doesnt have speedstep tech so the chip never backs down when idle. i was thinking of replacing it but am having some trouble identifying what chips would work in the laptop , with the motherboard and with the cooling hardware thats in this laptop.

the current chip as I said is a celeron 2.8GHZ 478 pin uPGA with a Northbridge chipset Intel Motara-GML i852GM 1.2V core voltage. I think I could swap in a Petium-M or Celeron-M with speedstep but I'm having trouble being sure a given chip would be compatible. Any thoughts on this would be apreciated.

RM Clock might help u out with the throttling before getting into swapping the CPU. It supports Celeron, according to the information.

cheers ...

I think that laptop only supports 478-pin, not the 479-pin celeron-m and pentium-ms use. You can only stick with the "mobile" celeron and "mobile" pentium 4-M, or basically desktop cpus. Pentium 4 will give you even more trouble with heat and the fans kicking in more. I don't know if your laptop would support the Hyper-Threading P-4s also that come with the Gateway counterparts. I would try rm clock also and put some artic silver 5 on the cpu to help on the heat dissipation.

RMClock

i grabbed RmClock .. it can monitor my chip but from what i understand this chip Celeron 2.8 has no speed reduction/voltage reduction features. I'd loive to find out I was wrong. I think i need to get a can of compressed air and make 100% sure the heatsink/fan assembly is really clean I have already done the best I could without removing ther assembly from the chip but maybe there is stuff trapped under that I missed. Thanks for the replies.

I'm pretty sure is too late but I just upgraded mine in the exact same model (m2105) with a Pentium 4 SL7EY (With an FSB of 400Mhz) And I am not experiencing any problems...

A whining fan maybe a sign of the fan itself going bad

ha we still have the laptop and I'm interested in upgrades actually. at this point it hardly runs hulu very well at all. im curious with the cpu upgrade you did if you could tell me if hulu plays smoothly on this machine now. i know a big part is the crappy video subsystem but I was wondering if a better cpu might make up a bit for it. also how difficult was the upgrade? i'd be looking to upgrade for as cheap as possible. have any sources for cheap cpus? thanks for the reply

Well, maybe I am not that knowledgeable after all because I don't know what 'hulu' is...

I can tell you this:

1) remove the upper screws from the back.
2) take of the long plastic board on top of the keyboard (Unclip the hinge covers first and then carefully put a flat screwdriver in the upper line between the gray line on the case and the black plastic of the board (somewhat above the multimedia buttons)
3) remove the board by releasing the brown clip and taking out the ribbon.
4) remove the keyboard and fold it backwards (You don't need to unplug it,
5) remove the metal cover on your left (4 screws (two longs and two shorts)
6) Unplug all fan connections
7) remove the small ground screw for one of the fans and remove the 4 big screws for the fan assembly
8) remove the whole fan assembly by CAREFULLY sliding it backwards (Set aside the LCD cable that sits on top of it.
9) if is is stiff it may be because of the old thermal grease... just play with it and it should come out
10) Remove the cpu

11) Get your hand on a SL7EY (The fastest compatible Pentium 4) I bought mine off ebay and it shipped from china and paid about $25 total including shipping.

Put in your newest CPU. Put a good quality layer of thermal grease (Artic or something like that) Make sure that both surfaces are clean before you put the grease and the fan back.

This is also a good time to upgrade your ram since the inner slot is right below the cpu. According to some guys here the maximum is 1280Mb Ram (I have 1Gb on mine)

You can buy a 1Gb SODIMM PC2700 DDR333 and put it in the inside and play with the one outside easily accessible.

This also a good time to inspect, clean and or replace your fan/s and the exhausts.

I don't know what pins takes what but you should be able to try out your fans with a tester so you can pinpoint if they both work and where is the whining coming from. You can also get a used fan off ebay too.

Assembly is the reverse. Make sure you plug everything back and that you keep track of your steps.

I am running XP Pro SP3 and it is working very well for me.

Good luck!

heh. i mean www.hulu.com which is a video site accessible in the US. its the only thing that this laptop does that bugs me. maybe you have seen a difference in playing videos before and after the cpu swap? I see there are 3.0 Ghz pentium 4s with 400mhz FSB and 478 sockets. I would imagine this would work if the 2.8Ghz does? I already swapped in 1GB ram in the external slot and its fine with 1.2GB of ram. It wouldnt shock me if it really supports 1GB in both slots. However I'd love to hear that it worked for someone before taking stuff apart.

I just went to the site and watched the first video with Jamie Fox flawlessly... Good quality no jerkyness... If you found a pentium 4 3.0 with an FSB of 400 please let me know... I did some research and found that the SL7EY was the fastest 400MHz FSB P4.... ghn told me that he did put 2gbs 'with some tweaking' http://www.notebookforums.com/post3127977.html I am somewhat content with my setup now but let me know if you ask him about what was that tweaking...

Tweaking on my M6805 consisted of playing around with CAS value on the memory. I had to settle with larger CAS memory modules for stability.

cheers ...

Oh great! Is good to know! I am assuming you did that on the bios right? Do you remember what were the values you came up with? You are using 2x1gb pc2100?
No BIOS involved, I used SysTools, and our in depth guide here.

hey lleiro do you happen to know which ebay seller you got your chip from I see a few. I thought I had a line on a free 2.6 one local to me but it turns out it was 800Mhz FSB. but $25 would be nothing if it fixed hulu performace for me. i think I may be able to get a second stick of 1GB ram from someone and if so I will post if I can get it working.

This is the link to the one I bought and it took a while because it ships from hong kong but is up and running smooth: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Success

Got my cpu finally. Good price but it takes a while to get here from china . Upgrade went super smooth. I think with applying the grease better and blowing out the dust its cooler than it was before. I took the chance to swap the internal and external ram so that if I find a good deal on a 1GB pc2700 or pc3200 I can just swap out the smaller. anyway I cant thank you enough for replying to my thread I now have an 8 year old laptop which now plays hulu fine (occasional tiny glitch) but very watchable now. I wouldt have tried it without knowing it worked, so thanks a ton. I'll reply to this thread if i get my hands on another 1GB and it works.

According to Crucial.com, your machine handles a max of 1.2 GB memory ( a 1GB and 256MB) stick

we're pretty certain that it lists that because the inside slot is not considered user upgradable. lots of other emachines laptops have similar listings yet can support up to 2GB see article http://www.notebookforums.com/thread121534.html

Roger that, then give er a shot
