Acer Aspire 5672 Review - Page 10

ya dude your laptop is broken FOR SURE if my x700 is cooking you. Hey ryzeki, have you tried undervolting your TM with CrystalCpuId? Brought my temps down considerably. Mine would perform great for a spurt, then slow down (CPU underclocking) then clock back up, then it would heat up again like every 3 minutes or so. VERY annoying watching my fps change from 40 to 20 in NFS Most Wanted plus the thing was HOT to the touch after 30 min. I was able to drop my voltage from 1.4 to 1.1 and stay rock solid using prime95 torture test for 8 hours. It has yet to crash even though to be sure you are supposed to run prime95 for 24.... Try undervolting, I've read that the Turion has tons of headroom for that for whatever reason, dropped my temps down to the point of non-issue. My laptop never gets HOT, its barely warm no matter what I do to the poor thing.

Cheers

OMG tell me how to do it!!! i want to unvervolt my cPU so bad!! i cant play due to that same problem!!

i had inestability issues, and my comp froze etc when i tried my first attempt with rightmark cpu.

can you tell me what did you do, how much voltaje do you currently use it on etc?? i really wanna be able to play.

oh and its a typo my CPU is a ML not MT, still i was able to get the cpu volt down to around 1.075v if i remember correctly. the problem is that my computer freezed whenever i tried to undervolt again. weird.

if you could help me i will be so happy

I used ATT, I got a near exactly the same score = 909.82
This is with the original Acer video drivers

Oh, great. Happen to play any games that would be a good indicator of game performance? I've got a lot of games, not all shootes, so maybe we could find something else to compare with.
Another unhappy user that owns 5673 model with the X1600 HM.
Getting same score in ATT seems not like a coincedence but it's indeed a fact of the poor perfomance the HM model shows.
But other people are getting much better performance than me in games, how many times do I have to say that? And just because it's 64 bit, there's no reason it should perform lower than a 64 bit Mobility X600.
ATI Mobility X600 has a 128 bit memory interface

I understand that you feel angry or dissapointed from the performance, hell i would kill them if they sold me something else from what i expected for the same price. If your laptop supports MXM you could be able to switch to a better card, most mfgs dont state the MXM feature even if it's supported, instead they try to shiled their market cause updating to a new card could cost them one less unit (laptop), so dont expect to call them and get a positive answer.

You could check the following site for a list of laptops that already support MXM, and if you are brave enough you can open yours and find out.

MXM List

Okay, just forget it. I don't know why you can't understand that other people with exactly the same hardware as me are getting much better game performance than I am, but this is going nowhere and you haven't said anything helpful in that regard. Thanks for trying, anyway.
Evaders99 has the same card as you and performs as low as your's. Maybe the other people with the 'same hardware' isn't so same after all. X1600 <> X1600 HM . Do some research on the web before posting as i did and found the major difference between those models, if you dont believe my word or the page that i provided you its your call, but sometimes you ll have to accept the truth.

Like I said before, lcvien has the same exact model as me, 512mb HM, and he reported better performance than me.

Bob: Man, my car only goes 20mph, but Ted's car goes 40.
Jim: Well, you've got a pretty crappy car.
Bob: But Ted and I have exactly the same car.
Jim: We think it's because they downgrade the engine in those cars.
Bob: But Ted and I have exactly the same car, and his is faster than mine. Older cars are faster too.
Jim: Well, your car comes in a V4 and a V6, you have the V4 so its performance is crap.
Bob: But Ted has the V4 too.
Jim: I can see how you're upset. I'd be mad too if they sold me a car that isnt as fast as I thought.
Bob: But Ted's is as fast as I thought mine would be, and he has the same car.
Jim: Maybe Ted has the V6.

I explained to you how the hardware affects overall performance, but it seems you didnt understand much, hell you may think memory bus is something eatable.

You say lcvien repoted better performance, but you never mention Evaders99 which has the same performance as you.

Have fun trying to sqeeze some frames, just dont fry the thing.

Undervolting is REALLY easy, there are already very detailed guides on doin this, just google "undervolting turion" and you will find it. Basically though you need CrystalCPUID and PRIME95. I also have an ML and in CPUID i leave the multiplier and set the voltage to 1.2 which for some reason AMD power monitor reads as 1.1. I have a ML34 vs your ML30 but you should be able to get similar results. YOU MUST turn off the power saving feature on your CPU, if it scales the CPU down and back up it will run at default voltage. I have my power settings on always on in control panel. Create a desktop shortcut of your settings in crystal (5x 1.2V) and put it in your startup, everytime you boot, the system will load the setting and you will have a full speed CPU running .2V more power than it normally does in power save at 800MHz. Pretty cool, mines totally stable, I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't since I was trying to avoid it crashing in the first place. Hope this goes well for ya.

Memory bus, eatable? What? I'm not stupid, I've understood everything you've said, but you aren't understanding what I'm saying. Yeah, Evaders benched the same as me. Great, lcvien benched the same as me too, but he gets better game performance. I don't care about the benching if he gets better game performance, but I figured I might as well complain about that anyway. Evaders hasn't given a good example of game performance so I don't know how he's doing.

Excelent, i have undervolted from 1.45v to 1.150v and so far no issues. My score on the ATT test increased to 1530.

I've been using the machine like this all day, ran prime95 for a couple of hours with temps reaching 79 on a close, hot area, and 73 on a well ventilated area. this is awesome i can finally play!

im going to try Battlefield 2142 right now.
any tool to undervolt recomended on c2d processor
post #196 of 214
applezoo confirmed a 3DMark 05 score of 2886. So its comparable to what we are seeing. Lcvien said

I can play Doom 3 with Ultra High settings at 1024 x 768 with a steady 35~ FPS and it drops to about 20 - 25 if I run into a few enemies..
I will try to load up Doom 3, I see there's some kind of time demo I can use with it. If we can agree what game benchmarks to use, I can post some other scores
post #197 of 214
there is no way to undervolt the intel chips, they are locked.

THATS awesome ryzeki, I'm glad it worked for you too, I thought that the reason for the hang ups was the lack of video memory/bandwidth and the dreaded cache thrashing but it was all a really HOT CPU. Now all we have to do is find a fix for our x700 memory bandwidth.

lonesoldier, what are your FPS in CS:S is a 20 player game with no bots, on an office map to compare to my "64-bit bus" X700 which scores a 1500 3dmark05 and pulls a very decent 35-50 fps and over 100 in certain instances (small hallways, looking at walls etc). Just to give an accurate comparo because like you I don't trust 3dmark sometimes. But my frames are completely playable with everything cranked accept anitaliasing. I have everything else on which was the default, filtering is on trilinear.
I'm trying to understand how the undervolting would improve performance. I don't see anything significant by changing the voltage using CrystalCPUID , ATI Tray Tools returns around the same
post #200 of 214
Evaders, I had to play Doom 3 on medium (except 1024*768) to get an average of 30 fps with lows at around 18 when I ran into enemies. It would go as high as 60 I think but that was rare, when I was looking at a wall or something.

If you want, just try the very beginning of the game, IIRC I got 29fps looking around from where you first start with my settings.

t-unit, I don't know, I've never played a twenty player game. How about you try something for me, it will be easier I think. Start cs_assault with 15 bots on normal, join CTs, and go to the right towards the staircases and back doors. There's a little alcove, stand in it and start firing at the Ts when they start coming out of the back doors. That's what I'd been using to compare my FPS with different driver settings. See what you average and how low it dips until the combat dies down. That make sense?

Thanks, both of you.
