Acer Aspire 5672 Review - Page 3

Any more info on this? Has anyone gotten higher scores?

The ASUS is looking more and more tempting to me, but I'm not sure about the warranty. I assume it'd be by whatever company put together the system for me on the S96J, and that could be a mess.

However, when I see the ASUS (not including OS) for only about $100 more, and the 1.8ghz processors and 256meg X1600s...

*Sigh*
choices choices.

I hear the S96J has very low, bad quality, audio through the speakers.
So... heat.. or bad audio

Yeah i want more info as well

The Asus is indeed tempting, that is why i have to make sure if the extra money its worth it. After all the Acer has more features such as BT.

but i really want to know exactly how much more powerful the Asus will be over this Acer.

and i dont mind the speakersof the Asus

new benchmarks with the latests drivers etc would be helpful

Krista, where have you looked up the Asus? i currently have seen the Asus on Gentechpc, Powernotebooks and geared2play. out of the three i think powernotebooks is the more expensive choice and Gentech being the cheapest. this could change tho.. and right now Asus s96j are out of stock in many places.

Cyberpowerpc.com seems to be the cheapest that I've found. If the speakers were good I'd just get it. Yeah, if I put XP Home on it, it'd be about 150 or so more, but I don't need to do that, I have a copy of XP pro... and I'd probably want to reformat the Acer with pro anyway.

You've heard the speakers on the ASUS?

I'd enjoy the bluetooth but it doesn't cost much to get one to plug into the USB port. The larger HD is a nice selling point on the acer too.

Cyberpower indeed has the cheapest one, but i heard bad things about them, that is why i stayed away from them. i use http://www.resellerratings.com/
to check their rating, and they have low score compared... to lets say Geared2play, which has like 9 of score.

About the speakers, i have no experience with the Asus speakers, but my current Travelmate has really weak speakers, so it seriously cant be worse than this.

I have a copy of Windows XP pro too, that is why the decision is hard too heh. and i dont mind much about the HD space, as i mainly want speed, so 60gb would be alright, i usually burn all the extra stuff. But it is indeed a nice selling point, because its really big.

And about the heat of the Acer. Honestly i dont mind the heat, as long as it doesnt impact performance like in my travelmate does

Oh, about the install on the Asus with XP pro, i read in their forum that there are issues if you dont install an XPpro with SP2, so if you have a copy with SP1, you would need to sleepstream SP2.

I stil would like some more tests on this Acer please!

Adamant has a good price, but they're not one of the big three or whatever that people usually buy from either. I don't think I can buy it from the other guys... I'd have to buy the Acer instead. The price is just too high in comparison.

Come on guys, give us more info!

Damm, had to pay some stuff so now i have less money than planned.... it looks like i will have to get the Acer, or wait much longer to get the Asus.

Maybe getting this Acer, then upgrading to Merom would do.

Please post more info about this acer please! i seriously want to avoid any weird issues, and perhaps find the reason of the low 3dmark03.

damm, this machine is quite cheap for its features. the 1069.99 price on newegg is definitely drawing my attention.

I'd say the correct scores for this machine (well actually only on 3dmark03 because there is still no 3dmark05 score to compare) would be in the 7k range for the 3dmark03 and above 3.2k 3dmark05

The scores above are speculation for the Acer based on the Asus, except the asus scores higher. Asus scores are around near 8k3dmark03 and 3.9k for 3dmark05. The differences from this Asus and Acer are Core duo 1.83ghz vs 1.66ghz, and the X1600 256mb with 449/396 vs the Acer X1600 128mb at 470/370.

Hope to hear more info on this, as it seems both mine and Krista's decision lingers around the results of this Acer in the Gaming area

Yep, that and the heat, and whether or not it affects the performance of the machine. I don't know why Acer has so much trouble with heat, it's very annoying that they seem to perfect otherwise!

Even with my laptop cooler my 5672 will climb as high as 70C and knock me out of Sim City 4. Pisses me off bigtime when I spent an hour building the city and poof it's gone.

I used NHC to underclock it down to .95 x 6 which helped a few degs C, and I found if I turn the laptop cooler over so it is sucking hot air out of the laptop it actually runs cooler than blowing up. Haven't played SC4 since undervolting to see how bad it climbs yet.
Well 70 is not that bad, my CPU goes to 84°C before the super cool begins. Everytime i reach 84 °C, CPU downclocks to 800mhz and temps go down. It doesnt kick me out of games tho, that is indeed weird.

at 70°C i doubt there is an overheating issue per se... do you have the lattest drivers for your card and processor? im not sure what could be the cause.

Oh and yeah i get to 84°C WITH a laptop cooler

benchmarks and frames per second in games are welcomed

guys, i dun seem to be able to o/c my x1600. it shows on the tray tool that o/c is disabled. hw to enable it?
Reinstall the omega drivers but dont select yes where it says "is your computer a laptop" or something like that. that disables the O/C feature. maybe they did that because some people burned their machine because they were careless.
yeah... i click no but it is still disabled. I encounter a missing file of atiicdxx.ini which omega did not copy. any idea what happen?
hmmm strange. i had the same problem but it solved when i uninstalled and installed the omega again clicking no. Maybe they didnt install correctly?

try donwloading a different version of the omegas, uninstall your current ones, reboot, install new ones and then see if the options are still disabled.
the missing file is fixed in the current download
omega drivers say that it doesnt affect anything (I have to agree I just skipped that file)

70C. Maybe I'm wrong to compare that to my desktop Athlon 64 running in the low 40s... but that seems very hot.

I'm leaning more towards the ASUS. Mwave has a good price and should have them in stock tomorrow.

I got this one for my sister though... I hope it works out for her.

the X1600 should be able to be at 470/470 easily.
i tried again. same problem occur. nw d/l the current 6.5 to try again. any chance acer locked the gfx bios clock?
I'm using the ATI 8.252.0.0 driver (5/3/06)

I could try rolling it back to the one that came with the computer.

I tried Omega Drivers (6.5?) and I saw no improvement. If anything the computer bogged down with them.
try again with new 6.5. clean the comp with drivercleaner b4 install. still o/c disabled. any idea how to enable it?

Unfortunally Acer has different specifications regarding 5670 series in each country. Today in Greece the 5673 was released which I think is the 5672 with the X1600.

Specs:
T2400 1,83GHz
2048MB ram
120 SATA 5400rpm
ATI X1600 up to 512
15,4" TFT 1280x800
Price is starting from 1410 Euros in greek e-shops which I think is a very good price.

I'm not sure if the X1600 has 128 or 256 MB dedicated RAM. I think it's the 128MB version but I 'm going to call Acer Greece to find out.
