Is that something I can swap out? Also is there any way to see which screen I actually have? Samsung, LG, Hotpoint? etc....

OOOOPs is right. I thought he was referring to the AC adapter if it was the 90watts or 130 watt unit. I didn't know Powerstrip was a utility.
I will download it right now and check things out.

Thank you.

Okay I ran Powerstrip and it is a SEC5557 which is the Samsung Screen.
Which is the right screen. If it is then I don't want it.
It's going back on Monday.
So much for trying a Dell.

That sux....because All alot of ppl are saying how nice the screen is etc...

Is there light leakage?
did you adjust your colors right?
And are you sure its not glossy?? not talking about the colours. Talking about the reflective properties of the screen...looks like glass. If you are in a dark room and there is an open light behind you....you should see its reflection in the screen. Or if you go outside in the sun you should have trouble using your notebook.

I know what a glossy screen looks like and this ain't it. It just looks washed out and dull. There is sparkle or grainyness and it just doesn't look good. I have a 2 year old HP which has a matte screen and it looks better than this 17 inch Dell any day. If it is suppose to be glossy than I have the wrong screen but according to the Powerstrip utility I do have the SEC 5557 model which is the Samsung screen but it isn't Glossy at the least.
There is no shine to this screen at all. This is a sub par screen and if this is the best that DELL has to offer I don't want a Dell.

I also purchased several 9300's and a E1705, and must agree that while the screens are "ok" there are nowhere near what Fujitsu, Sony and HP (with the Ultra-Brite option) offer. I currently have a Vaio, and the brightness and the color saturation are in another league. The Dell screens do have a grainy quality, and a small sweet spot in the center of the screen. As far as light leakage goes, some people have better luck than others. I'm beginning to wonder why Dell keeps using these screens where there are obviously better options available. I'm sure it's a cost cutting measure, but now is not the time to be offering sub-par displays. Just by reading some of the posts, there seems to be a lot of screen swapping with dell and returns due to light leakage, and this HAS to cost them to the point that using a better screen isnt' such a bad business choice to begin with. One of the recurrin' themes you'll hear is that "My screen is wonderful" or "My screen is incredibly bright". Everyone will have a difference of opinion. I think that bottom line is to put the Dell side by side with one of the afore men tioned laptop brands and do a real comparison. Most people that just purchased a $1500 laptop aren't gonna go "my screen is crap", because that's just not human nature.....in most situations. Everybody's gonna tell how good it is, but I almost get the impression that they haven't really compared it to anything else. alot of the sony laptops athough have a greta loooking screen, pull a miserable resolution no where close to the 1920 x1200. That many of us have become familiar with.

This is exactly what happened to me,my screen went dull with a matte finish. At first I went to quickset and checked my settings and found that it was not on Max Performance, once I switched it back to MaxPer it was brite again. But as you would know it my screen went to a matte finish again called dell on call-nothing happened, called tech support-ran dianognistics and could'nt fix.I returned my e1705 to get a refund,so far dell is taking care of me.As you can see in my sig I had a 7800 go,when I get my refund I will purchased one with a 7900 gs.So you can say I'm not that upset.

you can also have the screen replaced.

Can I tell them which screen I want or is it a crap shoot and I might end up with the same screen again?

LCD panels are manufactured either with a matte or gloss finish. They don't spontaneously change from one to the other!

You can't specify a particular screen. You might actually end up with a worse screen, like I did

Read about Dell TrueLife and others here:

I find it rather bizarre to see a screen coating described as "anti-reflective" when it basically acts like a mirror! Also, the claim that TrueLife and X-black are identical is simply not true. I have compared my TrueLife screen side by side with a Sony X-black, and the Sony wins hands down, having far lower reflectivity.
