Got my 1705. Not impressed with the WUXGA LCD - Page 4

Thanks FlashSVT,

I did check the site and there was some helpful info about upgrading my Video Driver which I did and it did make a difference in Benchmark scores.
But I can't stand the 96 dpi Font size with the 1900X1200 display. So I switched back to 120dpi, I guess I have to live with the jagged edges.

However, I still think my display isn't the greatest. It is very dull and grainy. Not at all like a Truelife WUXGA display should be in my opinion.
Does your SEC5557 have a glossy surface? Mine doesn't. It is a matte finish and I thought all the Truelife should be glossy? Anyway, I am going to have them replace the screen and see what happens.
I wonder if there is anyway to ask for the LG display or am I going to be stuck with the same Samsung unit?

Do you have a part number or model number on your LG? Is it the LPL0000?

Thanks for the info!

Heck, I have a major Sandy effect and jagged edges on the letters and Sparkles and overall a very Dull and washed out screen. If anything they should call their screens TruDull and not TruLife.

Please tell us how you like your screen and if you are seeing any problems with the LPL0000.

Hey sorry I couldn't respond sooner... been gone all day. For starters I love my screen, its definitely glossy and I have none of these "sandy" effects or w/e it is other people are having. I have a beautiful crisp and clear screen. The only thing I have to complain about is the slight light leakage that is visible on black screens like the windows xp load up screen. It's noticeable but it isnt horrible. Other than that, I'm very satisfied with this screen.

Thanks for your input el 777

I will try and have DELL replace the screen with the LG model. Hope they will do it or else I will take my business elsewhere.

Thanks again for your input!

Yes, if they are not glossy something isn't right. Nothing matte about it.

Mine: DF028 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD

My GF's: CF176 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, SAMSUNG

I haven't dug any deeper to see exactly which panel (OEM part numbers) they are.

What does yours say on Dell.com when you enter in ther service tag?

Well, on my packing slip it says the part number is a YD505 and powerstrip identified it as a SEC5557 which is a Samsung Screen but it is definitely not glossy like those of other companies. For instance the HP Brightview. Now that is a glossy screen or the Toshiba Trueview (or something like that).
Also a very nice glossy screen. This SEC5557 definitely not glossy. I ran a couple of DVD's through it and they ran okay but the quality wasn't great.
Of course I am used to them running on my Big Screen with my Up Convert DVD Player which makes things look a bit nicer anyway.
But there is a certain Dullness to the screen. I tried adjusting it via the Display area. That helped a bit. I brought up the Contrast and lowered the brightness and tuned up the Vividness to medium. Now the colors are better but it's still not what I would expect from a Truelife type screen.
Perhaps they forgot the Truelife coating? I guess I will call them and see what they will say.

Thanks for your help and input.

No problem man ...anytime, if you have anymore questions let me know. Here is something to do though if you havent already and I just found this out based on the previous post or two... go to www.dell.com, then go to my account and login.. hit the support tab and then a new screen will load... under the electronics and printers tab you should see a link saying "my systems and peripherals"..click that. When that loads input your service tag.. if you dont know it, click find my service tag and it will find it for you. Once it's entered click add and your system will show up at the bottom. When it does click the link that is your service tag at the bottom. It will load a new page with a more detailed list of the parts you ordered. See what it says your monitor is... this is what mine said.

1 DF028 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD

Make sure yours says glossy and whatnot and see what kind you have. Hope that helps

its really simple to see if its true life glossy or not, take a look at my video I did a while ago:

http://www.houkouonchi.net/videos/ -- directory to right click and save as
http://www.houkouonchi.net/videos/mac%20os%20x.avi --link to file

If you notice even when the display is off you can see the backround and everything reflecting, quite clearly, especially my ceiling fan.

Interesting. Powerstrip says my matte WXGA+ screen is a LPL0000. So is this LPL0000 supposed to be matte or glossy???

The LPL0000 is a WXUGA screen and should be a glossy screen.

Dell Update. Dell actually sent me a new Laptop and it does have the LPL0000 LG screen and it is a lot better than the Samsung SEC 5557
No more light leakage, no sparkles, no graininess, and it's definitely glossy.
A much better overall screen. The only thing now is that the hinges on the new system creek like they are going to break when I try to close the damn thing and the power button sometimes powers it on and sometimes it doesnt

I don't think LPL0000 identifies a particular screen. Obviously LPL signifies LG-Philips but I guess they didn't care to provide an ID for the screen type so they left it as 0000. Also, panels of the same type can have different coatings. Glad to hear you got the LG-Philips screen, though... I just wish I could get one.

I have the Samsung on my 1705 WUXGA and it was great until recently now I have tons of light leakage on the bottom and both sides! Has anyone had this happen?

Lpl0000

I just got my screen replaced (previous LG glossy went bad after 1.5 years). My new screen is also an LG (LPL0000), but it's matte, not glossy. I just discovered they made matte wuxga screens. It would have been nice if Dell tech support told me that. I've been on the phone with them twice now complaining I got the wrong screen.

So yes, the LG comes in non-glossy...

I am sure you're not making these remarks under aunlight. You'll be glad you have this "dull" screen when going outside.
