blue ray in 9300/9400/xps2/m1710 ? - Page 3

Blue-ray FTW! the more space the better. I remember when our first CD-RW drive (2x1x4 (2x write, 1x re-write and 4x read) cost $700 and it was ricoh, with its own SCSI adapter. I am sure they will come down in price quickly once they start getting a bit more common.

Well, so far here in Japan... you can buy a USB 2.0 blueray drive for about 1200 USD and a USB 2.0 HD-DVD for about 500 USD.

Still too steep for my wants but you could also go the route of buying a XBOX360 HD-DVD USB Drive and finding the drivers to get it to work.

Either way.... a slim line version of either drive is still a ways off.

I think Blu-Ray already has the edge over HD-DVD. Big names such as sony and dell already forced it on their consumers. Basically the only other two who are competing against them are HP and Toshiba.

I don't feel that bluray has the edge--yet. The cost is too high on the bluray drives.

Doesn't matter to me who wins, though: I'm waiting until either one side wins or I can get a relatively cheap dual-mode drive (there's already one company out with dual-mode laser pickups sampling their parts).

Didn't you see my last post? Dell has a blue rayplayer for the M1710 XPS system. It must be a slim line
version to fit in that package. So, it's actually here and not a ways off..

Uh, HD-DVD has Microsoft, Intel and Universal on it's side.
Also the 360 outputs HD-DVDs at full 1080p resolution, and it is a beautiful thing.

At this point I see that HDDVD has the edge. Much cheaper hardware including USB2 Xbox drive that can be used with PCs and almost all HD-DVD releases are really close to reference in picture quality while majority of BRay releases are clearly inferior due to use of bad encoders.

As a storage format which is what drives the format totally you can see on paper blueray has got it pretty nice with 50GB singlelayer discs except all my cds are scratch prone thus BD will be useless to me but if dell doesnt have a combo drive lined up I dont expect to see a HDDVD drive for quite some time.
I'm still holding out for a combo drive myself, but from a strategic standpoint I hope that Sony wins the HD media war. I want Sony to balance out Microsoft and several of the other heavy players in the consumer electronics field.

On another note, Dell-M's point is well taken; DVDs are already pretty bit-error prone when it comes to scratches, due to the bit density on the disc surface--I hate to see how much more of a problem this becomes with HD-DVD, let alone Bluray.

I like Sony equipment alot but they really need to give up these format wars.

Sorry for bring up an old tread to life, but it was the only one on my topic.

Well I have successfully upgraded my 9400/E1705 with an internal HD-DVD drive.

I installed the Tosihba LH-802A model I picked up on newegg it was an external and I took it apart to use internal. It does full 1080p, still waiting for Tosihba to release thoses HDDVD recorders.

Any photos?

RoachXP what software are you using to play your HD DVD's. And tghat is an awsome mod. Would love to see pics.

Couldn't find the drive you specified but found this one.

Not sure if it will work.

If only it the drive had faster HD-DVD read speeds over 1x, and dvd+r over 4x, and had write capabilities for HD-DVD, i would be all over it.

Does the dell faceplate fit the toshiba drive?
Nice drive. Man they've come down.
Yeah did you have to change the faceplate?
What sort of cpu will i need to decode HD? 7800gtx handle any of it?
i am interested
i think the 7950GTX is the only card that will support HD thus far... i could be wrong though
post #59 of 64
My 7800gtx support 1080p to laptop display, but you need HDCP if you want to output via the DVI to 1080p display or it will be downconverted.

My drive is about 1/8" short of being flush with laptop side.
I might make the drive external again, to be testing out some SSD of 73gb and 146gb betas, going to see how battery life compares to my current ones.

Are you sure?, thru the dvi to a hdmi we can´t display 1080p.
I thought that we can play 1080p ts and mkv files.
If you are right we need a tv that has vga port
