Hi all!

I want to transfer some music from my computer to my lap top. Do you know how I can do that? I connected the (Ethernet) cable to both the desktop and laptop. I know I can proceed the file transfer from the existing programs on my computer, but I don't know where to start?

Can you help me please? THANK YOU!!!

Look in your windows help section under networking and sharing files.

Alrighty.

First, if you just cable the computers together with a normal Ethernet cable, it won't work. Normal cables connect computers with routers/hubs/switches/etc; in order to connect two computers you need a cable called a "crossover cable", which has some connectors reversed.

Once you have the computers connected you can mess with Windows File Sharing, which always seems to not work well. A better option would to use some sort of USB storage device (thumbdrive, hard drive, ipod/etc.) to move hte files.

I've never had a problem with windows file sharing in 2000/XP, so long as everything is set up correctly and it's not being blocked by anything such as a firewall.

It's just a matter of putting them on the same WORKGROUP, configuring your firewall to allow file sharing, and setting the appropriate permissions on each folder. Then just access it by Start>Run>\\ComputerName\Folder.

It's probably a good idea to set your WORKGROUP up any way, just so you can share files and printers. It definitely beats sneakernet.

bighusker is correct. Also, with most modern PCs you do not need a crossover cable--just a regular ethernet cat 5 cable will be fine.

I am getting really desperate. I'm not computer savvy at all so I really don't understand the long way.

I've transferred (videos/music/pictures) from my desktop to my other desktop in my house successfully a few months ago, but I don't remember how. I remember it was easier though, hook up the two desktops with the (internet router or Ethernet cable) And I used some program on my computer to transfer the files, and they were transferred though "My Documents"

I really do not remember how I go about this. I seriously forget. This is the easiest way but I don't know how anymore.

Please please help me. Simplify please

Why don't you use the "help" in windows xp....

go to start --> help and support --->

in the box type "file sharing."

They have instructions dumbed down for you...

No they dont. I spent 30 minutes in there before I posted for help. There are no steps.

Ok, i will do my best...

First of all... are both PCs networked?, do the network works?, if the answer is YES go on, if not, make work the network.

So, now your network is running, time to share your files, go the folder where your files are and click right button over it, click on SHARING and the change the radio button to "Share this folder".

Then go to the laptop and go throw "My Network Places" and you should see your files, just CTRL+C ---> CTRL+V.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really dont know which is your OS, so, if you can give me more information i could help you better.

Sorry about my english.

Saludos! (cheers).

As long as both PCs are hooked up to your router (the ports on the back of your router are actually part of a built-in switch, seperate from the router), you will be fine.

And yes, you can do this wirelessly as long as you have a wireless router. As long as they're connected to the same router, whether wirelessly or wired, they will be able to see each other.
