AMD v Intel - What is the Merom Core2 Duo equivalent from AMD?

Hi I have been looking at purchasing a Centrino Duo laptop but it has come to my attention that Intel's new Merom Core 2 Duo is expected to be shipped in August. I am undecided on whether to wait for the Core2 Duo or look for an equivalent from AMD. Does anybody know what the direct competition for the new Core 2 Duo is from AMD and is it out at the moment?

Turion X2, it's "out", just not easy to find. Ferrari 5000 and 1000 have the Turion X2s.

The full name is the AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile (quite a mouthful, I agree). The first two Acer notebooks to use it will be the Acer Ferrari 1000 and Acer Ferrari 5000. Shipping / pricing isn't known yet, but should be announced in the next few days.

Thanks. I've heard the Turion 64x2 is a match for the Centrino Duo but I think the Core 2 Duo will be better and AMD will be playing catch up again.

I'm definatley going to wait for the Core 2 Duo after comparing the 2 processors.

Uh.. he said equivalent, and given teh Merom/Conroe performance right now, there is NO way the Turion X2 would be anything close to equivalent. Hell, the current Core Duo beats it, so....

32 bit, dual core. That's Core Duo. 64 bit, dual core. That's Core 2 Duo. That's also Turion X2. So, Turion X2 is the competitior to the Core Duo now, and the Core 2 Duo in the fall. That's their "equivalent". Where its performance lies in the grand scheme of things, I don't know. Neither do you, until the final product is out.

Kinda hard to compare something that you cant get your hands on. And its kinda hard to believe something else someone has done when its clearly unreliable and biased... kinda like the few sites claiming to have compared the Turion X2 & Core Duo.

Until there's a comparison of the 8204 and Ferrari 5000, or another amd/intel "clone"...it's all conjecture. Reviews showed the Turion to be worse than the Pentium M, but the comparison of the 8104 and Ferrari 4000 showed the 4000 to be the better of the two.

I'm waiting as well. I'd love a Core 2 Duo, assuming it's the better of the two, in a package like the Ferrari 5000. I love the rubber palmrest. Otherwise, I'm not sure what I'd do. I'm not that big a fan of the smooth plastic palmrests Acer uses...

Lets see a show of hand of people who RUN XP64 on thier AMD machines... yeah, not many.

But i do know the performance delta - just look at all the reviews out there. Sorry guys, i love AMD as much as you do (have several AMD desktops), but face it, AMD is not the way to go if you want good mobile performance AND battery life..

I'm raising my hand on the XP64...but that's because of a need for proper addressing of 4GB of RAM. That said...AMD and intel BOTH have XP64 compatible computers, although only AMD has XP64 compatible laptops. So, we can't be pointing the finger at AMD proclaiming it be a worthless feature available wholly to themselves. In a few months, both will be XP64 compatible (and Vista 64).

I'm just saying that we've seen these same kinds of benches before with the Turion, with it being trounced by the Pentium M. That's why they're called PReviews, not Reviews. However, when actual Turion notebooks came out, that the initial preview benchmarks didn't necessarily match what retailing notebooks were showing. The Turion-equipped Ferrari 4000 had better performance at full speed, and better battery life when in battery saving mode than the comparably equipped Travelmate 8104.

That said...I'd never reccomend a Turion over a Core Duo...Dual core is too much of an advantage. But I'd be ambivilent towards a choice between the Turion and Dothan, pending the package.

Also, you check my sig you can see I'm not biased one way or the other. AMD and intel; ATI and nVidia. I've owned 9 Pentium-m based notebooks(3 Banias, 4 Dothan 400, 2 Dothan 533) vs. 1 Turion....but the Turion notebook was my favorite(Ferrari 4000). If I could get a Turion in a Thinkpad T4x chassis, I'd still be running it.

But...for now, at least, let's hold off arguing which product is better until the actual products are out(and reviewed independently), and leave it at where I had it...that the Turion X2 is AMD's answer to Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, regardless of eventual performance.

(For the record, I have a feeling the Core 2 Duo will be the winner in that competition...and if I can get my tower sold, intend to buy a high end Core 2 Duo.If Turion X2 is of comparable performance, great. I'll look to them as well. )

you armchair experts would benefit from going to the respective sites for Intel and AMD, doing some research, and then forming an informed opinion.
