LCD/Screen/Display Satisfaction. Are you actually HAPPY with your display???

Thread Starter
Simple question... Does anybody have an e1705 LCD screen that they are actually happy with and if so what kind is it??

Also, does anybody have an LG Phillips screen that you are actually happy with?? If so, do you just accept the light leakage/defects or is it great-perfect quality??

My story.....

I have the regular WXGA Screen (No UltraSharp/TrueLife). I had a decent amount of light leakage at the bottom that came up about half an inch. It was very annoying while watching DVD's and that such.

Today Dell sent out a contracted computer repair dude and replaced mine free of charge and the new one looks even worse. Apparently you can ONLY get the LG Phillips LCD displays now (I asked if anything else was possible at all and got a "no" after dell support looked into it, I was hoping for Samsung or something.) The guy was pretty rough with the laptop too, maybe he just did a poor job of replacing it.

When I get back home from work I plan on popping it open and seeing if I can make it any better myself, but highly doubt it.... So now the question is...

Is it worth bugging Dell AGAIN and requesting another new LCD?? Maybe I'll even offer to install it on my own. I'm wondering how many more times I should bug them until I get something atleast a little better.

If it annoys you that much, I think it's worth bugging Dell. I have a 9300 and when I got it in Nov 05, it has leakage at the bottom of the screen. I almost returned it actually, but I thought I'll give it a week or two to see if the leakage disappears or at least improve at a tolerable level. I believe after a month or so the leakage was such that it's not noticeable anymore especially when I'm playing games or surfing the net. I've never used it to play dvd movies. There are threads that discuss this exact issue. Do a search and type "leakage".

From what I've read in other posts, you can request a new screen and install it yourself. If everything else fails, you can always return it.

Good luck.

No. See this thread for my story.

I would keep complaining until you get a LCD you approve of

This is the only way Dell is going to realize there is a problem, if everyone keeps complaining, and asking for replacements UNTIL you have a LCD you are happy with, therefore costing Dell a ton of money.

They'll soon realize it's cheaper to pay a bit more in the beginning, and send out a quality LCD no one will complain about hopefully.

Don't settle for nothing your not happy with, you didn't pay $1000+ for something to piss you off, or be unhappy with

Good luck.

Precision M90 non Truelife (Samsung) and it's amazing .. got a tiny bit of leakage on the bottom but it's barely noticable.

So yes, i'm happy with it.

The Samsung seems to get the most rave reviews

Weioo, I have a samsung (according to my order) (Dam, I just had the laptop apart and didn't verify) and it has leakage. I am very unhappy with it as it also has a "grainy" appearence, very noticable when watching DVD's. I paid the extra $100 for a true life monitor.

I contacted Dell, a few times, and they had me send it in. They replaced a cable (didn't state which one). No change.

I've also read in these forums that the cause of this may be the backlight inverter and that the part is available online, not just through Dell. I have not been able to find the part number yet. If anyone knows where to look, please let me know. I've talked with Dell a few times regarding this issue and the impression that I get is that as long as some type of light appears on the screen, they feel the LCD is okay.

I will continue the struggle but the LCD is the difference between night and day. I would be hard pressed at this point to buy another Dell with this quality and difficulty of them answring questions. I feel the LCD is half the system. I feel I got 50% of a kick butt product. I will continue the struggle and try again as I feel Inspiron9100 is right. The only way they are going to know how bad their product is, and how good it could be, is if we bug the hell out of them. Keep calling. Good Luck.

Nah I'm not happy with this WXGA. It's not as nice looking as the WUXGA display that was on my XPS2 but at least the resolution is more tolerable. If it was coated at the factory with truelife then I'd be very happy. Right now I'm looking into a 3rd party service that applies a coat to WXGA screens to make them just like truelife screens for $100+shipping.

My LG WUXGA truelife has NO light leakage. I love it.

I have 2 non true life WUXGA panels in our I9200's and one of these as a slight sparkle but otherwise great screens. I also have a Samsung truelife WUXGA in an XPSgen2 and also love it. I now have an Samsung in my M90 that I also love and finaly I have a Sharp WUXGA panel in an 1705 that is also a nice panel. The new Samsung in my M90 is my favorite (it came from a co-workers 1710).

is it possible to upgrade my plain lcd to a truelife one? can i make up an excuse about something wrong with this one ask them to replace it with a truelife?

I had my first 1705 with a sammy screen...awful leakage, simply awful.

My new one has an LG. The leakage is slight, but the colors and BLACKS are so much better. People no longer ask me "What's wrong with your screen? Did you drop it?" anymore.

Now the ladies say "Wow! You are a freaking stud and I want to make sweet sweet love to you down by the fire..." or something similar.

I bet they just use your LCD as a mirror and say "wow that mirror makes me look thin".
