well just got a return message from alienware and i am not happy. instead of replacing the mobo like the TS said they were they are ordering another hard drive. and those are on back order!!

this will be the third hard drive they have tried!!

now my warranty is out so when the system fails again i will have to fork out the money!

i am so upset right now i dont even know what to do....

a system that has given me prob since the moment i have taken it out of the box and still no fix...

If I were you, I'd definitely ask them to extend your warranty. With three repairs in that short of a time (and a questionable outcome on this last repair still), they should have no problems backing their work with an extension of your warranty. Especially since it has been the exact same problem (with the exact same "fix" three times now.

Good luck, and don't give up!

yeah i asked about the extended warranty while i was getting prices..they said the only warranty they offered would be for tech support not part replacement.
just wrote them and told them if they do not replace the mobo i would appreciate a refund

Save yourself some hassle and see what AW-Steve or another AW employee here on NBF can do to help you. Just calmly explain what's been happening and even give them a link to the thread. From what I've seen this course of action gets results and I dare say you need some of those about now. Hope this gets worked out soon.

just an update...there is no update (other than i have calmed down a little)... adrianna wrote me all day fri and pretty much didnt tell me anything new. she pretty much said my refund was out teh window since it has been over 30 days...the depot still thinks it is a hard drive issue and not a motherboard issue...
still no update from steve, but i am sure he has alot on his plate.

hard drive is on backorder so i am not really sure when the system will even get fixed.

just in case you were wondering
:-)

.... i still think its the mobo. Steve does have a lot to take care of, and its good you've calmed down a bit. It'll be resolved eventually... hang in there!

thanks bfisch...yeah i still feel like it is the mobo...
be great even if they would just let me get a replacement (like say that dual core!!) :-)
but honestly as long as teh thing is fixed and it last at least a year i will be happy...

just getting prepared though...anyone know what model the m5700 is? and the best place to buy parts?

Just a quick note about reinstalling XP, you do need a floppy with the SATA drivers (RAID or non-RAID) in order for your HDs to be recognised. Also did they ever ask you to test your RAM sticks? I had a problem with one of my RAM sticks once, and got BSODs.

i tested the ram the last time i called TS before i sent the system in...which is another reason to think it is the mobo

Did you test it using one stick of RAM at a time, or did you use the memtest utility? I have been told that the memtest utility does not always pick up faulty RAM and the best way is to test it using one stick at a time. Also, to reinstall the OS, you can just go out and buy a cheap floppy drive (very cheap these days) and get the drivers off the AW website and then put it on a floppy instead of waiting for them to send them to you. But if the system doesn't POST at all, the problem is likely to be more serious so getting the mobo fixed is the right thing - hope you get that mobo fixed. When I got those BSODs (only quite recent, after some months of ownership), luckily for me after some AW guidance, I tested the RAM sticks one at a time and found that it was just the RAM that was faulty and nothing more (fingers crossed). Good luck!

yeah i did the physical test...in fact we tested the ram when i called them to install drivers from the floppy they sent me (which we never did)...i did not run a memtest on the unit.

as of right now i am still holding out a little hope that alienware will do what is right....

just keeping my cause alive....still no word from steve or alienware...i asked about an update on teh hard drive (since there is no sign on the website that hard drives will delay your order... and she told me

As per the information we have been provided, we are still waiting for the HDD replacement to be received. Once it is received and installed, more tests will be performed on your system in order to verify if the issue persists and if any other item needs to be replaced. We will keep you updated.
so i am in limbo now...each day that the depot has the system is another day i own that product, which makes it a little harder to get a refund or a replacement unit... ok enough complaining for one day
