Questions About Dell e1505.

I'm thinking about getting an Dell Inspirion e1505. I want to know if I can upgrade the Intergrated Video Adapter after I purchase it? Or do I have to make that desicion when I buy it?

If you want one of the ATI cards, you need to order it with the laptop. The motherboards with integrated Intel video are different from the motherboards that have a connector for the ATI cards.

So while I chose to go with the X1400 for my E1505, I'm curious about the "Technical Details" for the video adapter choices. The integrated Intel graphics were shown as having a 256-bit path to memory, whereas the ATI adapters were shown as 64-bit. I figured out by reading this and the Dell forums that the ATI was still a better solution if any gaming was going to be done, but I still wonder if the datapath widths are correct as described, and whether the smaller datapath hampers the ATI card in any way. Does anyone know some details about this?

Unfortunatelty marketing bullets usually cause more confusion then they dispel . Both of the GMA950 and the x1400 are 256-bit GPUs. I don't know what the GMA memory interface is, but the one for the mobility x1400 is 128-bit, unless Dell has neutered it. Any advantage that the Intel solution has in terms of memory bandwidth would come from where it is located (in the chipset) and probably be lost having to share system RAM for texture memory.

Doesn't the ATI card share memory also? 128 mb (x1300) and 256 mb (x1400) are just the max amount of system memory each of the respective cards can take use of? Should I stop ending my sentances in prepositions to?

So I just got a e1505 with intergrated graphics thinking I could add the 1400 down the road. I take it I am S.O.L.?!

Yes you are SOL. You can not upgrade from the integrated graphics.

don't feel too bad, this series as not really intended for gaming performance. Even though it is much better than integrated intel, the x1400 is a pretty mediocre video card. It won't run any current games on higher settings.

what is SOL?

The ATI cards do make use of some system Ram, but they also have some (32Mb and 128MB respectively-I think) dedicated video memory.

The ATI card is a better choice if you want a machine that can handle light gaming duty - the ATI board has more 3D features and better directX support.

I wasn't an english major, so it doesn't matter to me.

is all about the technology like shaders that x1400 has over the GMA. 256mb dedicated memory with HYper Memory means that 128 will be dedicated and 128 from system ram. 128mb x1300 = 64mb dedicated and 64mb from system ram. x1400 can handle current games on medium settings but u cant play long without a laptop cooler!
