Anyone have USB hub problems?

I've used two Belkin USB hubs with poor luck. Anyone else have problems? Lag, stuttering, poor peripheral performance, etc. I don't know if it's the hubs or the laptop's ports. They work fine when I connect them directly.

Is the hub externally powered?

many peripheral devices would not function 100% when hooking up to an external hub (powered or not).
u should check with the manu to get the latest driver, on Windows site as well - if it is available. chipset driver update would not hurt.
disable "saving power when idle ..." option would also help.
many hubs come with cheap power adaptor (5v &less than 1A) that are just as bad as non-powered hubs. make sure that u get a 5V-6v with 1A-2.1A (more A is better too but watch for the external devices power requirement)

The absolute max that will be pulled from the port itself is 500mA.

correct & agreed!
but many external devices would not work just on 500mA alone, hence the "extra" power that is needed.

Yes, that's why I asked OP if it was externally powered TThe second post was in reference to the "...cheap power adaptor {sic} (... less than 1A)..."

very politically correct. "cheap" was the wrong word. thx.

Yes, both hubs are externally powered. Here are the links:

Belkin emailed me back yesterday and said to try connecting the hubs directly into the wall. I tried this, the hubs reset, and it worked for about 30 seconds. It seems that whatever device is currently being used takes over the hub. For example, my wireless keyboard will lag for about 10 seconds before it kicks into full-speed mode. My ShuttleXpress video editing tool won't work until I've clicked it about 15 times. My tablet will work normally until I use another device, then it will just function as a mouse - no pressure sensitivity and the expresskeys quit working (this one never comes back to full operation). It's quiet annoying. The rear two USB ports on my 7405gx are loose and don't function to well, so I don't use them. So either the Belkin hubs are really crappy, my peripherals don't play nice, or the 7405gx's internal USB controller is weak. I am going to test the hubs on some other computers when I get the chance. Honestly, I'm hoping that it's just the Gateway's USB controller because I want to upgrade to a 13" MacBook which only has two USB ports, which means I would absolutely need good, working USB hubs to function in life

i have had several usb hub problems. primarily when i am installing a usb device my m6805 has trouble locating the correct driver. it seems to be related to matching the vendor device id to the driver, even if i choose the option to point it to the correct driver (have disk).
the devices that have refused to install are the bt hub that comes with the logitech mx900 bt mouse, an epson r320 printer, a mobility easidock 300f port expander, a premier systems usb 2.0 mini-hub (which is supposed to not even require a driver), and a microsoft wireless natural multimedia keyboard.
devices that i have installed without any problems are an ati wonder pro usb tuner, a samsung ml2010 laser printer, an adaptec acs-120 usb 2.5 in hard drive enclosure, a digi gr8 pocket size usb camera, an anycom usb-250 bt hub, a logitech cordless mx-duo mouse and keyboard, and several usb memory sticks.
in each case i always unplug all other usb devices to eliminate any power related problems and tried installing each on different ports.
and of coarse all calls to manufacturers tech support have been absolutely useless.
has anyone else experienced similar problems?

I'm in a similar situation - Logitech MX510, Epson R220, MS wireless natural multimedia keyboard, Samsung ML-1740, card reader, etc. Always worked horribly with my Belkin hubs & Gateway 7405gx. They work perfectly with my MacBook. Go figure. The Gateway must have a crappy USB controller inside. Just to test things, I hooked up my laser printer and stated printing stuff while running both the mouse and keyboard, all off the same hub. Steady as a rock. With the Gateway, I would get keyboard or mouse lag with only ONE device connected. Yay for Macs

thnx ghn, that site was very informative and set me on the right path. the tip about clearing out all of the usb drivers in safe mode did the trick....
i am now typing this post on the keyboard that would not work b4. in fact i was able to get all of the non functioning usb devices working.....
i am running most of them thru the mobility dock which has a hefty 4A external ps. i ran the anycom bt hub on a seperate port so it doesn't have to share port bandwidth with another device since i use that mainly for the mouse. i even have 2 ports on the lappy still open except for occaisionally plugging in flash drives.
we should prolly start a thread about the most peripherals added on.....
i am one happy camper now.
