Go to 64-bit processors ??do u know what's coming ? - Page 2

Gaming is fun, CAD is work related .

Yah; But

Many of the tools used for game creation are very simmular to the tools used for CAD. 3DS MAX and, MAYA are used for both.

I have seen people on other Tech Sites claiming that you do not need faster procs and all. I say they are nuts.

I think computers are still in the "model T stage" we spend way to much time working on them insted of doing what we want to do. The boot process alone is a good example.

For any Mac guys; this applies to Macs too.

Cheers

oh man marquis...
next you're gonna say you don't have any use for cold cathodes, LED fans, fUnc pads, voice over IP - oh yeah. this is a notebook forum...

Hrm, the only 64 chip that was at all impressive was the fx, and thats not that impressive if you look at price vs performance ratio.
But it all depends on what you want to do. And considering p4's machiens are cheaper to build that get the same performance rate now...
Wouldn't mind having me a 64 chip though.
Just as long as it's not that POS fx chip
That and going to be a discontinued chipset too. er, socket size i gues
post #25 of 40
There are two AMD 64 chips? What are they and why is the fx going away? I thought the FX was the fastest one?
The FX isn't going anywhere...but AMD plans to have only one FX chip at a time, so the FX-51 will soon be replaced by the FX-53.

Actually, personally, I don't have any use for the decorative stuff. Just a waste of energy, time and money. But then, it keeps you gamer boys happy and as long as you keep pushing the technology, what do I care. I'm happy enough to ride the coattails.

Nothing against fun, I just happen to get a lot more pleasure out of creating my own stuff in 3D than playing in and with somebody else's. I like getting paid for it too rather than paying for it.

The one that I really got a kick out of was making your case look like it was filled with water, what a hoot!!

And I do enjoy the stuff they come up with at mini-itx.com. There's even a kit for making the wierdest dang computers you've ever dreamed of, not even having cases. One was modeled after an airplane with the propellers being the fans blowing across the exposed (well sort of encased) processors.

By the way, I don't know why someone would consider the Athlons POS, especially the FX models, they are very credible processors that not only outperform the P4s in 32 bit they will dominate when apps go 64 bit and anybody that believes 64 bit isn't going to happen is hopeless. Same folks that complained about 32 bit and before that 16 bit. Oh well, just that much less competition for the chips that are available.

The Fx has been taken off the AMD Roadmap. Haven't heard that they'll be doing the fx-53.

There are actually 3 64 chips. The Fx, and the basic one, then the chip with half the cache. Don't have much info on that, but from what I've heard, there is hardly any performance difference.

I've been to Intel factory where they make the ICs, electric circuits and pentium parts ... i DID like the way intel handles the chips and how it trats equally the employees (they get great paychecks if they were actine , around 2000$ for a good engineer !!)... but not an AMD factory....but it's probably almost the same .It is amazing how technology is really really expanding ...just 14 years ago IBM announced the first personla home computer and now we have personal SUPER computer in the houses !!... if u make a contrast that it is all really unecessary to obtain the best because it will be old in a year or so (industry is fat developing) and because we don't even need the best becasue it is enough for us to buy computers to do a normal job and not to do a server job where powerness is needed there.
bottom of line YOUR sensations and curiosity make u wanting to buy the best but if u look at it carefully u won't always be needing all what are ordering, for me it's really rather intersting to be educated ( of course in that way i don't have to pay a large sum of money to get a new laptop )but i am not going to get my imaginary laptop in coming time. There's a lot that is going to be announced in summer (new stuff, like a new 1Gb hardware or small CDs from iOmega ) will be inserted in the laptops line ... and still this is only one thing ....

Nevertheless i am fully supporting the edge-computers because i like new stuff (especially electronics), So if u want something to buy then make it above good but not best ... good advantage u'll same the bucks to something better ...like maybe buy a small television with the remaining 300$ !! is that good enough ?

Also why most of u are possesed by intel's product line ??!! it's ovious ur a person who wants the best so look for the best and not for the most famous ...
For me i saw AMD ruling in some things over intel but still intel has lots of sellers and bigger industry lines(ok..SO what??!) , i think that AMD's profit will increase and that their processors will spread more but it's a matter of good action by AMD or they will lose a lot. Intel is continueosly announcing new CPUs to distract the awake people about competing pruducts in the market.
WAKE UP people, everybody around us is playing with our heads !! A laptop should be as expensive as 3000$ ...That is crazyyyyyyyyy ...they at least have a profit of 500$, it's only because of it's name "NEW HIGH EDGE" ??!! why the heck people buy what is soo expensive, im telling u it's better for u to get a new laptop at cost price from a person u know to help with that and u'll see how much less it would cost. I think about it and say it's better for me to open an ALL-IN-ONe store to get everything i want at minimum costprice .. Just think about the money u throw for nothing !!

As alluded to earlier, Intel is working on a X86 64-bit chip, codenamed "Yamhill". Should be formally announced here shortly. Need to wait for the Prescott buzz to subside.

Microsoft has already released a beta 64-bit based Windows XP. Very buggy still. For instance, many 32-bit programs didn't install correctly. Some hardware sites did some benchmarks. I don't think the 64-bit programs ran any faster. In fact some programs benched slower than their 32-bit counterparts. More optimization needs to be done

Here is a quote from Gabe Newell concerning how the move to 64-bit would help with Half-life 2 related projects.

It's a huge win for tools as it not only gets more work done per instruction, but it also gets us past the current memory limitations, which are a problem for us today on tools.

Intel is announcig a 64-bit x86 chip, ehh? The problem is, unless they borrow AMD's instructions, the two chips will not be compatible and there would have to be two discrete OE's to run on the two platforms. Intel and AMD would split completely, and software would have to be made specifically for the two platforms...

Would Intel swallow it's pride and borrow AMD64?

I still prefer Intel's previous approach to bring an entirely new 64bit platform (probably based on Itanium) not compatible with x86. After all, we want a true 64bit revolution, with all parts redesigned and all software rewritten for the new platform. AMD's approach is but a transient compromise.

Intel is the one that screwed up the works here, with the rediculas pricing of the Itainium. Windows for Itainium already exists, but no one can afford the hardware. So now we are stuck with AMD's bad Idea. Intel did not use their leadership position wisely and AMD saw an opertunity to short circuit them and used it. The hole thing is a mess, cause x86 should be killed right here and now.

While we are talking about CPUs; I read in the latest PC Mag that the Prescot has a 32 stage pipe-line up from 20 stages, where as the Athalon has 12. What this means is that the Prescot gets less done at the same frequency as the Northwood (current P4). The very long pipe-line has but one purpose. Decieving the customer with inflated clock speed.

I will not buy any Prescot CPUs.

My pick for the next fopaw will be Intel purposly crippling PCI-Express so they can hide the fact that their cpu is the bottle-neck. Don't laugh, cause this is the same company that insisted on USB 1.1 over firewire.

I just baught a new 8890V and I think I made the right choice, cause it's gonna take a couple of years for this mess to play out.

We all should be thankful that AMD is keeping Intel from pulling the usual 33MHz increments every six months BS of the past.

On the lighter side I love my new 8890V

Sager doesnt make crap its clevo, so if clevo comes out with the 64 bit processors then im sure sager will get their hands on it.

Pipelining 101 from Anandtech.

With increasing the pipeline, you can increase the frequency, and you can increase the processing of data a corresponding amount. The problems that Intel is running into is that they can't keep the pipe full (x86 related problem), so its not getting the corresponding processing speed, at least the 3-4 ghz range. The Prescott will be at peak efficiency at the 4-5 ghz range.

If you read on in the Anandtech article, it points out that this move to a longer pipe was planned about 3 years ago. It wasn't last minute.

Because of the inefficiencies of the x86-64 architecture, it will eventually be ditched (10 years?). Intel has the IA64 ready for when the x86-64 architecture hits the wall. The IA64 architecture is very efficient.

What's bad about AMD's idea? People are able to transition to 64-bit when they want to, and as a 32-bit platform, it's destroying G5's in Photoshop tests - no small feat. Everyone seems to think that Intel should come out with their 64-bit chip, and the awe alone will cause everyone to drop their current computer and pick a new one up. Why? The average user doesn't need a 64-bit processor, and won't for a long time.
Well, there are many advantages to 64bit processing other than the ability to address much larger memory. Advantages such as protected mode, faster integer and floating point operations, more efficient registers, etc. If manufacturers and software makers can make a swift transition into pure 64bit computing, dropping x86 completely, it would be great. But as it stands now we are doomed for a slow and painful transition.
