Or is it simply that everyone states the rise/fall time, leaving out the obviously larger rise+fall time?
Nah it's dobutful. 25-35 ms is pretty standard shipping for Samsung manufactured books. That's total response time. 50 ms on the Hitachi's is night and day as I had the miserable misfortune of finding out. I use my desktop 1800fp as a reference and the difference was obvious.

This could be a typo in the manual. If Dells is using the same Sharp WUXGA screens shipping out in the 8 series books, then IIRC it's a 25 ms total screen. Otherwise, the manual is wrong or Dell has opted to go with a higher ms screen.

What's the link to the XPS manual pdf. I can't find it. Thanks.

This is a thread on lcd manufacterers. Notebook manufactureres use the same pool of lcd makers. This is for the x1000 specifically and the pdf with the details regarding W-lcd's is a few months old so the most recent Toshiba branded WUXGA isn't on there. HOwever, users are reporting great things about that as well. That's a good thread for anyone whose a stickler about their screens like I am.

I like the observation about the LCD looking even better than that on the 8600. I wonder why?
Why is everyone complaining about the thickness??? I have a small HP ze4430 and its about 1.6 inches thick (tall).... And the XPS is only 1.9?

OH! .3 inches!!! Big deal................................

I like thickness...the XPS looks stunning AFAIK - rugged and frightening!!

From the assembly diagram of the XPS, it seems that it has at least 4 fans...

Scary...

But everything is modular! Modular AGP, modular CPU/Cooling assembly, modular modem, modular speakers, ... This is a very good trend.

I decided to stick with my 8600 and pass on the XPS. I'll buy my next notebook when the 17" WUXGA finally becomes a reality in a year or so. Good luck to everyone with whatever machine you choose!!

Not to mention the price, $3600+ without changing anything! Now I will give them the benefit of the doubt since the pricing for the 8790 has not appeared, but I highly doubt it will be that much. You can go and get a sleek looking Voodoo for that much. Also, I don't know why everyone gets so excited about these upgradable GPUs. From everything I have seen they are much slower than a system with the GPU on board.
I went to one of those Dell kiosks. It's true the new XPS laptop is just plain pugly. I know how some people can overlook the montrosity, but this thing stuck out like a sore thumb. It reminds me of pancakes stack together in a heap. The good thing is the bottom half of it is mostly devoted to ventilation so overheating risk is probably minimal. Oh, another thing, after I configure the laptop, the ship date shown was March 29! That's more than a month away. Forget it.
