That's an interesting thought, though they did say all models post-graphic card release would include the new graphic card. I think it'd be odd for them to ship all models with an ATI card and then switch to a mandatory Nvidia card.

But stranger things have happened.

Free Alienware® T-Shirt - Black
Area-51m Multi-function Infrared Remote control

The differences for Dell:
Pentium®4 w/HT Technology 3.4GHz,15.4 WUXGA (3.4 and WUXGA, not sure the specs on the dell monitor
Graphics Card 9700 on dell
Works, T-shirt, and Remote Control on Alienware

Total Alienware
$3,081.00

Total Dell
$3,368.00
-250 Mail in rebate (like these ever happen???)
$3,118.00

Your looking at $37 to get a 3.4 and 9700, Not sure about the screen quality and res yet, but I was planning on the 15.4" anyways

May have to see what kinda discount AW can do when the 9700 comes out

Edit 1 - Lets not forget the difference in Upgradable graphics, the key to why I like AW

Edit 2 - It also says the battery life is 2-5 hours, if that's true, it could be significant???
No offense but if you mean to imply that the Dell MIR doesn't arrive you're wrong. I've sent out over 20 Dell rebates in the past two years for various items and they've ALL come within the month. I had one problem with a hard drive but that was a mistake that was then rectified. Likewise, when you guys are pricing out a Dell, keep in mind that no one in their right mind purchases a Dell without a 10-15 percent off coupon that float around all the time.

Sorry, Let me explain that a little better. I have no experience with Dell MIR. Out of all the MIR's I've ever sent out, Lexar Memory is the only one I've ever received back. I just learned not to count on them or buy based on them its good to hear they stand by theirs. Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't intend to give that impression. I'll fix that on the initial post.

Do have anymore information on where to find one of the coupons?
There are none floating around at the moment. However, here are some deal websites that usually post the coupon codes when they become available. For what it's worth never EVER buy from Dell without one . You'll save a bundle.

www.fatwallet.com
www.xpbargains.com
www.slickdeals.net
www.techbargains.com

For fatwallet, go to their forums-->Hot Deals

If you're like me, I've become more of a consumer whore when I frequented these sites a few years back. Hehe, you save money but you end up spending more because of the great deals that come around.

GO TO dell.com every day and you see coupons for that day only

Thanks guys, with the shape of things those might come in handy
post #48 of 76
No, the coupons are NOT on dell.com. Those are just the sales, freebies they put in your system. The coupons that are emailed out that people post are on TOP of any so-called instant savings or MIRs, etc. I have yet to see a coupon code posted at dell.com (and no, these aren't the e-value codes). If I'm missing something send me a link.

Either way you slice it up...

This is a cool product release. That means mainstreamers will help drive down prices with the specialty retailers.

Guys, we've been recognized by the world's largest supplier of PC's! Rejoice!

You definintely did . For what it's worth there was info in another thread about AW lowering their prices. Let the price wars begin!
A bit of a lively discussion on the subject at Slashdot here.

I put in some good words but got slammed, some other good comments and thoughts as well.

Good call, Craig; you're right about that.

Dell's advertising tactics with their low prices are questionable and will often border along bait and switch tactics.

A friend of mine called Dell after seeing the ad on TV for a $400 computer and was told that that deal does nt exist despite just seeing it just minutes before the call. Are they selling that fast?

If you simply look at the numbers displayed next to the models displayed on their site, the prices are low. But the base models displayed will often require selecting more options which will quickly put it in the same price range if not more than Alienware, Sager, and Voodoo.

I'd have to disagree dell has some excellent prices...

you can get a dimension 2400 starting at 349... thats comes with like a p4 2.0, 128mb ram, and 40gb hdd...

your not gonna use that as a uber gaming machine but for the home user that is an excellent price... thorw in 100$ and you;ve got 512 RAM.

dell doesnt market towards us, they market towards the eveyrday internet and email home user

"US" as in the type that will throw in all the options available.

Hate to say it but if you go on the AW site today it looks like bait and switch to me see thread below for details. On top of that, they've rearranged their prices again (twice today) and their "Top Model" price says 16.1" lcd on the first page and when you go to configure it is the 15.4" screen, maybe a "mistake", but what they've done today to make up for the Dell announcement is pretty shady. Maybe their just scrambling, but you shouldn't use your live site for developing your web page

That is one ugly laptop. Powerful, but ugly.

I HAVE JUST PUT MY LAPPIE UP ON EBAY...so that I can get the Dell POS gamer notebook that looks like a nasty plastic inspiron with some black crown molding...Yeah Right!!!!

The funny thing is that the majority of Dell owners have never even heard of Alienware, Voodoo, or Sager!!! I do give credit to Dell for making a decent entry into this area but I have to reiterate that at this price why would I go Dell instead of AW, Voodoo, or Sager? Dude you're gaming on a Dell?

I can think of a few reasons...

1) dell doesnt lie to their customers on a regular basis.
2) better screen(from what ive heard)
3) built in wireless works better(basing this on the assumption it would work as ell as the 8600's built in wireless)
4) 9700

id stillg ive the edge to AW, but i can see why you'd go with dell also.

Tax.. Ouch

Don't forget everyone.. In many states, Dell charges TAX. So on a typical system as configured above, your talking a couple hundred dollars. Suddenly that $250 rebate is just covering the tax so there is a bigger price spread.
Although one cool thing is that the system has a DVI out, but I am assuming (hoping) the AW ATI 9700 will too.

I just noticed that the Dell only has a 4X AGP bus with the 9700... whats up with that?
