Dell releases XPS Gamer laptop - Page 4

but than again...

My philosophy with Dell has been order half the memory you want (say 1 DIMM 512) and order the other 512 from Crucial for half the price! Dell wants $350 to go from 512 to 1Gig. My only question is, can you order PC3200 in a single 512DIMM or would it be 2X256's. I say this because my desktop has the same memory and you are supposed to have a speial matched pair, preferrably by the same manufacturer. Corsair (and others) ship the memory already tested together and "matched" for each other. Would laptops follow the same model?

Currently Crucial dosen't list the PC3200 for the Dell (obviously) OR for the AW 51m yet but I know it will be as least HALF as much as Dell would charge.
But can you just get 1 PC3200 DIMM from Dell or AW?

By the way, it's been said a hundred times before but this forum rocks! Smart people + Good answers = best possible gaming and computer experience!

Aslong as the chips are the same speed it shouldnt even matter if they are the same brand... i have 3 computers with chips form different manufactorers at the same speed andahvent had any issues at all.

Yes but is it Dual channel memory? I guess technically it could work with same spec memory. Just browsing the Corsair site and i think you can't get just 1 DIMM because I think by definition, you need a mobo with the capability and two DIMMS to get Dual Channel. I guess the Corsair XMS TwinX PC3200 I have in my desktop are tested as a pair to ensure compatibility for max performance, especially if pushing it by overclocking. I am doubting AW or Dell would ship with one Dimm so that may not be an option now. Dell had the 1DIMM or Two option on other 333mhz memory, but not on XPS laptop, which makes sense I guess. You get two DIMMS for Dual Channel performance. So my idea would not work in this case so stuck with buying all memory from pc manufacturer, or replacing ALL, which is not a good option an would probably void AW warranty.
Bottom line, it makes the Dell more expensive without that option as on previous laptops. Sorry for ramble...

Mobile memeory is a bit more fragile Ive already heard about the GeiL chips not working with dual channel using Kingmax or Crucial chips because the GeiLs didnt support certain memeory support and timing

Although one cool thing is that the system has a DVI out, but I am assuming (hoping) the AW ATI 9700 will too.

I just noticed that the Dell only has a 4X AGP bus with the 9700... whats up with that?
Very True. I configured the PC to my home which charges tax. Most online purchases do not. I reconfigured it to where my wife works in another state. There was no tax there. So since it is only based on where it is shipped to and not where you live, I can save $250 to ship it too her work. If anyone is in the same situation, check nearbye states and maybe save a few (alot) bucks.

Ok so Dell says it can and will upgrade the graphics card to the M12 when it becomes available, ok someone has to come out and do it. It's bound to cost to do that, but the end of the day you will have the M12 in your lappy which is what it’s all about

Alienware has user upgradable graphics but as far as I know Alienware haven’t even guaranteed the M12 let alone the M13 and to be honest I don’t think any company can guarantee past the M12 not with the transition to PCI Express due to happen.

Don’t get me wrong my cash is going on the alienware as soon as they ship with the M11 in the UK but I'm not expecting upgrades past the M12 If there are then great.

Plus the Dell is UGLY

Machina,

Has anyone over at the Dell forums taken the plunge? Can we expect a review of one of these bad boys anytime soon?

Craig,
From the shape of things, I should be ordering one (XPS) on Tuesday. Hopefully I'm making the right choice, but "Live and Learn". When I get it in next month I'll post a review over here as well.

Dell, oh, will be so sorry. Alienware, my precious Alienware. My precious . . .I have been frequenting these forums too much.

One other thinks that stinks about the Dell Video Upgrade option is that you have 1 year from date of purchase to utilize your ONE time upgrade. It would be nice to maybe have the option to maybe wait for the following generation of card if you didn't want to upgrade to the very next card.

You could always do it yourself and no dont expect a review till March first week at the earliest
