Unfortunatly I instaled the newly released Dell drivers and the same it displaces the icons. has anyone with the light staying on tried to reinstal the Dell quickset?
This definitely tells me that it is probably the driver that is causing the issue. In modding the inf lv2g must not have been able (or didn't think about it) to get it to turn off the LCD. I know it's not a design flaw, it's supposed to do it. I've tried reinstalling quickset and playing with the settings; it hasn't helped.

The biggest thing is, I'm fairly confident that it would fix the problem if I'd go to the Dell drivers, but is there no other driver that does it? I have a new quest for today.

cool, please let us know how that experiment turns out.
I always have one of the following problems: or the screen doesn't turn itself off when you close the lid, or it goes off but when i open the lid again, it has changed it's resolution to a very low one and back to the standard resolution. That means that all my icons are moved to the right top side of the screen and all my open windows are resized to very small windows.

Dell drivers: resolution change
laptop2go drivers: screen doesn't go off

Well, this is definitely 100% an issue directly related to the drivers. I've used the laptopvideo2go drivers for a while; and as soon as I switched to the Dell drivers from their website the LCD turned off as it should. I also tried the 91.28 drivers from tweaksrus, but they have the same problem as the lv2g ones.

I'm currently downloading some more drivers and will report back on my findings tonight. I might PM GFT and let him know of the issue with the Xtreme G drivers and see if there is any way to fix it. I also might see if I can find out if it's an .inf issue, or something else. If it is simply something in the .inf, it can be fixed no problem.

I'm using v81.87 from lv2go with none of these issues. i9300, BTW.

It appears to be a problem with the 90 series drivers. I have tried all of the 90 series from lv2g, omega, and the Xtreme G drivers. So far the Dell one is the only one that the LCD turns off with. I'll try going back to the older ones tomorrow and see what I can find.

Neither one of the 87 series drivers from lv2g are working either. Can anybody tell me the newest driver that has been reported to work properly?

Sometime I just run the latest desktop G-force/TNT drivers from nvidias site. The latest 84.21 turns the display out & does not displace the icons when reopening the lid. Both the Dell drivers turn out the Display on mine but both also displace the icons.

Okay, but this only seems to be the problem with the M1710, so if you have another model it's normal that you don't have those issues..

I can't get those drivers to work on my M1710, i get an error that my hardware isn't supported when i try to install them.

Zim is right this is driver specific. Dell has customized the drivers in a manner to power off the lcd when the latch engages.

Look in here
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\

There will be a {GUID} key that has 0000 and 0001 folder with a + next to it. Click on the 0000 key.

For the Dell drivers there is a value called;
"LidBehavior"=dword:00000011

For the Tweakrus drivers this value does not exist.

I have tried adding it manually and it does not work. There is something inside the driver that understands the dword then calls winmm.dll to power off the LCD.

I have this same problem with my E1705. I reinstalled the system, and the light won't go off when I close the lid. Apparently, we have discovered it is driver related. I am running lv2g 84.56. Will try 84.21? as someone mentioned it worked.

Ideally, I would like it so that if the laptop was on AC power just the monitor would turn off when I shut the lid--and when it was on battery, it would go into standby.

Hmmm, I have the same issue of course, and I think it is kind of odd that Dell made this a driver run operation. On the plus side though, now that snooz has narrowed it down to the specific registry key, this should be able to be fixed. I think GFT should be able to come up with something for the XG drivers
post #36 of 56
coool, can you please update this thread once a fixed driver is released so we can all download it = ) !!!! THANKS!
post #37 of 56
Thanks for your work snooz. That's too bad to hear that it didn't fix the driver though.

The nvidia drivers from their website don't work for me either, so I don't know how you are getting them to work jeff.

I also had this problem with my XPS M170 I might add.

Also, I have tested 7 drivers so far and the only ones I could get to work were the stock Dell ones. I'm not done yet, but it's still rather depressing.

Any more info on this? Should I just use the Dell drivers?

I've got the same problem with my 9300 while running vista beta .
