Fonts in Windows XP

Does anyone know what ways i can keep a ton of fonts in my windows font folder, without the windows boot up time taking forever? Is there a way in xp to turn off the feature that windows don't 'cache' (not sure what to call it) all these fonts, but still allow me to use them in word, publisher and/or photoshop?

I can always use a font viewer and then only input the ones i want to use at a certain time, but i was wondering if there was a alternative.

Don't know why one earth fonts would have anything to do with startup time. XP only comes installed with 278...

As for speeding up startup times, try defragging the harddrive, and checking that only programs that have to start up on boot are doing so.

I installed a bunch more fonts.. since i work with them all the time in graphic publications. I am familar with the defragging and stopping services from loading to improve boot times. With the standard windows font, my laptop boots just fine.

DFR, Try loading in another 600 fonts and watch how much slower your pc boots. WinXP must pre-load them so you can use them in all your text type programs.

XP adds registry entries for every font in the folder and checks the links on start up and, I believe, every time a new programme is loaded.

If you're a graphic designer you should know better than to keep a crap load of fonts active. You should use management software.

What i am doing now, once i clean out all my free fonts that look like crap, just save all my good fonts to a folder in my documents and instal and uninstal them as needed.
If you strugle to remember what you used in your projects after printing or saving for web just type the name of the font so next time you open it you know what to copy paste into your fonts folder.
Other than that there is no way i know of.

That's a loaded question as all the font management software I've ever used has sucked ass.

I can't stand Suitcase, personally, but that's one of the ones that people use the most.

Generally I just keep a couple core fonts loaded at all times and whenever I need a new font I add it. If you've got thousands of fonts loading at once I have a feeling that they're all novelty fonts that are rarely ever used in serious design. Those you can just install and uninstall whenever you need them. Just keep a few families of serif and sans serif fonts for text and some unique looking display fonts loaded and do everything else as needed.

During design, i like having my entire selection available to flip thru in the physical document that i am working with in photoshop. Untill you see a certain fonts in a certain publication, its hard to tell if it will work or not. Loading and unloading fonts is just a hassle.

Stupid windows font registry entries! haha.

I like to too but I try only to use a small selection of typefaces so it doesn't bother me. I have a shitload of fonts but I only use a few.
