Reinstall Windows. Problems with SD card reader.

Hi all!

This is my first message here

I have just bought a Inspiron 9400 (E1705 in usa I think). I don't like windows home so I format all hard drive and make partitions, to install windows xp pro to play and linux to work.

I have installed Windows, but SD reader doesn't work. I know works because before format with dell's windows SD worked perfectly.

I have downloaded drivers from Dell's web. These:

Now drivers are installed, all works, wifi, bluetooth, nvidia drivers, ... but when I put a SD into nothing happens.

See this:

You can see something happens with PCI 9.

So, Anyone have had the same problem? I readed someone here at forums, he said the best way to install windows it's to save from original dell's partition the drivers that are in c:\dell\drivers or something like that.

I read this after format so I think if anyone could send me this, I could solve the problem.

Thanks

There's drivers for the card reader on Dell's support website. Go here and enter your system info. Download the Ricoh R5C832 drivers in the Chipset section, and it should work fine.

EDIT: Restoring from Dell's backup partition will make it easiest to get your notebook running again, but it'll also restore all the bloatware that's the main reason for doing a full reformat and reinstall of Windows anyways.

I reformatted mine when I got it and reinstalled using XP Pro, for some reason even after going through and downloading the Ricoh chipset drivers and all and having them show up in the driver manager, my SD reader still would not work. I reformatted again using MCE this time and ta da the SD reader worked! I dunno if it's something with XP pro or what... but this sounds just like my problem.

I had the same problem recently upon installing Windows XP Pro SP1 on my new XPS M1710. Did a lot of searching around the internet and finally found a comment somewhere with what seems to be a solution (I have no SD card handy to test it)

Try Here

Scroll down to
Ricoh SD/MS/xD cardreader driver

It actually worked and installed drivers for my unknown PCI Device... if you try it and it works please let me (us?) know so that I can stop searching for a solution ;p Else later tonight my coworker will bring in an SD card and I'll post the results

I think the 'PCI Device' in the Device Manager is your Conexant HDA D110 Modem....

Assuming that is on your system, have you loaded that driver yet?

Doesn't address your SD card issue, but may solve the 'PCI Device' mystery...

Is your Windows XP Pro 'current' with Service Packs and identified downloads?? Could be something along those lines.

Using the above link I can confirm that SD cards do in fact work on Windows XP. From a couple threads I've read about the problem, the dell drivers work fine with Windows MCE, but no so well with other versions of windows. Here's exactly what the problem was so there's no confusion...

My dell (M1710) shipped with Windows MCE, I chose to reformat and install Windows XP SP1 onto my laptop. Upon reinstalling all the dell drivers from the dell resource CD I noticed there was 1 mysterious PCI Device that still needed drivers. I attempted to reinstall the Ricoh drivers included on the dell resource cd as well as downloading the ones off of dell.com neither of which worked. After searching I found a comment under someone's post (I can't remember the website for the life of me... it took some googling though to find) that lead me to the above link to drivers. Upon installing the drivers, I plugged in my co-workers SD card and it was detected although I didn't have the drivers for the Secure Disk Mass Storage device handy.

Differences between the dell drivers and the drivers I found... dell drivers = no driver that works under XP SP1 (maybe even SP2?) and SD card wasn't even being detected. Drivers off above website = PCI device installed and SD card detected.

Sorry to say I cannot confirm this as a 100% solution as I don't have an internet connection handy for my laptop to try and find the drivers for his SD card and windows wasn't auto detecting any. If you get an SD card working with the above drivers please confirm this to be a 100% fix

Finally works!
Feenix>> I have to use multicard.exe file and follow instructions from web. you were right.

this

It seems that SD cards in WinXP+SP1 doesn't work properly, with dell's driver, so we have to install this. Dell's windows was Home +sp2, this is why I didn't have problems before format.

Thanks all
You are great!!

Awesome. Glad to see that it worked and thanks for the link to the SD card drivers as well. I'll definitely grab that as soon as I get home ;D

SM Bus Controller

Hi,

I had the same problem yesterday after re-installing.
Finding the Intel Mobile Chipset driver after hours on the Dell CD made it run again. As I am not that good in computers and electronic I had no idea what the "SM Bus Controller" is - completely forgot about that tine slot.

Finally I found this latest version of the driver for my 9400 Inspiron and that one also functions.
