XPS vs 8790... it begins - Page 2

Javaman, sorry to break it to ya but Dell's web sight is made for the masses. Not for the computer geeks. Yes most of us on this sight do a clean install and delete all the "bloatware" that is included. We are not the majority..... I think you would be surprised that most that get this stuff like 90 days free A L think that they are getting something for free.

The business sight gives you different options depending on the laptop. Why Dell allows the business sector to choose to not have some things and not home/office is probably a marketing thing. Again they are geared towards the masses and they probably have contracts with these companies, like A L.

Dell is like the fast-food of the computer world and PCtorque is like the local burger joint down the road. This does not mean that the fast-food is bad or that the local joint is good, they just have a different menu.

Now, the XPS is a horrific looking laptop that needs to have some type of surgery, it looks as if they took the 8600 and placed it on some kind of new docking station. Price is to high and its to big, however with most dells price tends to drop.

I just don't see this thing having the staying power of the 8600. Maybe they are following Sagers lead in the ugly department Did I mention that it was big!!!! And who make the backpack for it, Northface, Lowe Alpine?????

And did I see an WUXGA screen on the OSBOURNE MODEL 1 ????

I'm sticking with my 8600. I'll look to buy a new notebook when we see 17" WUXGA models become available, possibly by year's end, but most likely sometime in 2005. Good luck to all struggling with their decision!

Upgradable graphics card *drooool*

However being forced to have a fancy paint job with an image on the laptop is not cool.

Price seems very expensive, would be nice to at least be able to save a couple hundred bucks by going with a 3.2 processor instead of the 3.4.

And I would definately have to see a 15.4 WUXGA first.. that seems small.

From the business website, you can configure it without the zazzy snap-on case.

I agree about the P4 options. I wouldn't buy it now, with only a 3.4 option (or EE). I don't like paying premiums. If it was offered with a 3.0, that'd be cool.

It may be pragmatic to wait for the 9100 line.

even the 2.8Ghz would be fantastic. save more than a couple hundred bucks all for the 9800 down they road. And GS i suppose your going to now consider the XPS over the 8790

Yeah, that 17" WUXGA will be so yummy whenever it finally happens (2005 seems to be the year). Until that joyous day, I'm gonna spend a lot more of my time playing with my 8600 and less of it arguing on these forums!!

The xps fully loaded seems like the machine to buy. I am on the verge of making a notebook purchase and am comparing the sager17-17powerbook-and the xps. I am interested in these multimedia machines not necessarily for their gaming capabilities but the cross application for digtial media(still photography, video, and web development) I am quite simply looking to buy the best desktop replacement made for these purposes. The hardware specs are certainly impressive on the xps. Does anyone have an oppinnion on whether or not the new adobe creative suite and other advanced multi media applications would be better served on the xps or the 17g4.

Go with the 8600 and save yourself 1500 dollars
post #32 of 57
I'm with D-M. But, even if you decide to go with the XPS, I'd hold off for a couple of months. Give it some time to be used by others to see what problems/issues crop up. I'm sure you'll see the prices moderate over time, as well. They always come down some after the initial release.

I wish they had a full scale keyboard!!!
Go with the 8600. You don't NEED either to do what you want to do. Spend the extra $1500 on a 3 ccd V Cam.!

The HP has a full scale keyboard...nice!
but what video card does HP have?? Not good..........
I would love to have a full scale keyboard laptop that is upgradeable to the M12.

You can ONLY upgrade the graphic card as long as Dell does not chage the slot spec of the motherbard on upcoming models. (See INTEL)

There does not seem to be a slot standard in notebooks. Not like the AGP slot in a desktop. The next generation mobile cards could have a different pin out design and then what? You get one upgrade and ..have to buy another $3500 machine in three years. So the idea of keeping a machine becasue the bottleneck of the video card has been solved may not actually be true, Will ALL future V card upgrades FIT?Or just ONE TIME ONLY? Will there be BIOS upgrades for such if needed?

I wouldn't bank on the upgrade thing in making a decision on the XPS. Too many unanswered questions.

You right there is no standard.

Well since video cards do not come from the video chip manufacture the pinout of the card it entirely up to the notebook manufacture.

Dell makes their own video cards using chips from ATI and nVidia. So if a new graphics chip is released its up to Dell to make the card in a form factor that will fit in the notebook.
And Dell does not say anywhere there will be a Standard for ALL future V Card possibilities. I believe it's a ONE TIME only uopgrade!!!

We are not talking AGP here!

What people need to remember is THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TRUE desktop replacement notebook. It's just another notebook configuration using desktop chips...which I believe WILL be replaced in performance by the Dothan issues in the next year or two.......The desktop chip in a notebook thing is temporary in my opinion. Technology will catch up in a small form factor..IT ALWAYS does!!!

Resistance is futile.
You will be assimilated.
