Sigh.

Encrypt the damn hard drive from Windows. You'll need XP Pro.

Has it occured to anybody how easy it is to remove a laptop HD, and remotely mount it?

Password protect the Hard drive from the BIOS and NOBODY's going to be doing anything to that Laptop's Hard drive. A guy brought me a D600 Latitude he was given. Put a new motherboard in it only to find out the HDD has a password on it. You absolutely cannot remove that password without either getting the master (good luck) or with some very specialized equipment. Don't think you can get around it by moving it to another machine either. The security is part of the ATA spec and the password is written to the Firmware tracks of the hard drive. Nobody's come up with a way yet to nix ATA passwords using normal PC hardware. Beleive me, I spent the better part of two days researching a way to just get rid of the password on that Hard Drive and reformat it (didn't care about the data)

If you remove the 2.5" harddrive from the inspiron and connect it to another computer, whill the harddrive password remain there? If, can it be broken easely?

In short; how secure is the Inspiron harddrive password?

set both the bios and the HD passwords and then try again.

It's quite hard to do really. I mean if someone REALLY wanted to get at the data they could, but for an average joe's computer a Laptop thief would just pop the drive back in and sell it on eBay to some unwitting idiot.

There's a company in Russia that sells the equipment to erase ATA passwords.....for $30,000 US.
