HOW TO: Change your POST Bitmap - Page 2

yeah we are DLing WinIMAGE now...
We knew the BootCat and BootIMG we needed for the bootable functionality, we were just unsure if we needed to get the .bmps into the BootIMG.bin file or not.

thanks for the tips though

we have edited the BOOTIMG.bin with WinImage, it reported the image was full so we deleted the sta dard .bmp's and inserted the new one.

My friend is a WOLF nut so its a wolf.

It boots fine.. But we failed to get an image with only 16 colors... OOPS! lol this is fun indeed!

You have to save the image as 4BPP. You don't need to delete anything, the BMP should be about 150k in size, there's plenty of space in the image.

yeah we see that now....

I tried for hours to make that work, but for some reason I kept getting disk errors.

Anyone know if this'll work on a Latitude? I hate my lame Dell screen on my D820. I don't know how dis-similar Dell's BIOS is between Latitude and Inspiron models.

Haven't tried this yet on my XPS2 but did on my old 8000. I modified the original boot image by adding "property of *my name*, a small passport style pic and my mobile number.

Very ingenious idea for those that live in "high laptop theft" areas. Can you post a screeny of this? Would be cool to see.

Anyone tried this on an xps2/m170 yet? Sorry if I missed it and you have.

I just tried this out on my D820.....IT WORKS! I grabbed an image off deviantart and resized and recolored with The Gimp. Looks a bit off, but I guess that's due to the widescreen. I'm going to try some other pics and see if they look any better.

Someone want to make a pic that "plays" with the stock dell pic?
I mean a pic that is similar to the stock photo but with a "twist"

Sucuess...

thanks dude worked without a hitch

Btw... I'm using a i9300 (bought it about 4 months after 9300's came out) and I'm using the most current bios revision also... Now to make my own bitmaps to stick on there...

I'm tempted to let it take longer to boot so that I can see the screen longer lol

I believe it's been posted here before.... I have my asset tag (I think it's the asset tag) set to display "This computer belongs to "My name here" when it boots up. It's displayed on top of the Dell logo. You can make it say anything you want actually, so it might be interesting to some.

It's not very anti-theft as anyone with computer background and google would be able to figure it out and change it...I guess the same applies to this POST bitmap thingy seeing as how the instructions are available here. Anyhow, it's a nice added feature to play around with if your changing images and even if you're not.

I'm afraid my 8000 is a few thousand miles from me for the next month - working away from home at moment so sorry I can't post screen shot.

Works on the XPS G2/M170.

I guess the question now is, how do I get back the old boot screen? Or better yet, how do I get the same boot screen, just with a different logo instead of the dell, but with the load bar and all that?

To get the old bootscreen back, assuming you're using Dell's utility you'd just type at the command prompt splash off Unfortunately there'd be no way to add an animated loading bar to your own bitmap....I don't think bitmaps can have transparency can they?
