edit: also is there a way to change the Dell Media Direct boot bitmap screen to something else. (this would be really nice) Please someone !?!
Media direct is just a stripped down version of XP, so get a customised XP bootscreen and replace ntoskrnl.exe in \\windows\\system32\\ when you boot media direct.

Why can't you use your own images? Did you read the instructions?

I followed the directions a couple timesusing multiple pics. got them resized using adobe photo down to 640 x 480 and 8 bit and 4 bit color. I keep getting the error message could not open. any thoughts?

true, and I already replaced the ntoskrnl of mediadirct with my custom one (works fine), but there is a previoud bitmap that appears before the windows screen does

(press MD button) -> Dell POST -> Dell Media Direct Bitmap -> MD ntoskrnl bootscreen -> MD windows

or

(press power button) -> Dell POST -> ntoskrnl -> WinXP (regular xp)

There is a bitmap that comes after the Dell POST Bitmap (which this thread alters) whjen you start with that button, then a Dell Media Direct Bitmap (I want to change) -> then into Media Directs Ntoskrl Bootsceen (which I changed) -> and into Media Direct stripped windows.

I'm not exactly sure where this other Bitmap is located, possilby the bios? I dunno, but thats what I want to change. understand maybe?

melshaw make sure you are using the .bmp extension when typing the command...i put the executable on my bootable flash drive and just type spl2 [picname].bmp

Yeah that is the wa i enter it. I tried entering it a couple ways justto be sure but I still get cannot open error. How large in kbytes are the bmp pics on average? in a jpeg my pic is only 13kb but in bmp it's like 150kb

Sounds about right, is the bitmap actually in the image? Which files are displayed when you type 'dir'?

Ah. The problem was my image character name was to long. After renaming to just xps it works! thanks for your help.

Works on my E1705 (bios A07)
I used my usb flash drive to do it. I made my flash drive bootable with Flashboot. Then I extracted the files from the dellsplash.ima file and copied them onto the the flash drive. (I found that you don't replace the command.com file already on the drive) I made an image in paint and saved it as a 16 color bitmap.
Link to .rar archive with the files on the flash drive:

Whoa... Thanks for that .rar. I just downloaded it and I plan to try it soon. One question, is that just the files, so I just copy them and pull them to my flash drive?
yes, that is one way but to be sure you can go here:
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread181387.html
And an earlier post in this thread where I uploaded the executable

The .rar is just the files on the flash drive, not an image. You will most likely7 have to make the drive bootable in some way first. (remember not to replace any file already on the drive after you make it bootable)

Updated first post to include XPS M1330 and changed archive to add instructions for creating a bootable USB drive.

I also want to add that this worked just fine on my Inspiron 1200 w/BIOS revision A07

I have got it to work on a Latitude D820.

I thinking in replace my plash screen in my XPS M1530, does anybody know is any issues whit this laptop??.. (since i didn't see in the first post the m1530 confirmed)

Maybe have to be the first one?

what do you guys think? is it any risk for my lappy ?(i don't think so, but I just wondering)

I'm planning to make a XPS logo splash screen and i'm going to share it here. Thanks in advance.. this is a great forum !

PS: sorry for my bad english.. :P

I don't think its risky but I haven't done this since I had my XPS2. It should work just the same as it worked on the old machines.

Hi, where is the ISO image? all links are dead. Edit: found the link, here it is: http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/46...r-post-bitmap/ Thanks in advance

Anyway, it didn't work on my Inspiron 3000. I got a message like this: no bios compatible, upgrade your bios.
