anyone recently have a 9100 die and get replaced? - Page 9

A Dell technician is coming on monday to replace the motherboard because of my heat issues. I don't think this is going to solve anything but I suppose it will be one step closer to having my laptop replaced.

Anyone here ever had the problem, where the AC adapter connector to the laptop jack would overheat really bad from time to time and screen would eventually flash? If so did Dell replace your laptop?

I don't know how she got such a great deal, but my girlfriend bought a 9100 from someone on campus knowing that it wasn't booting for $250. She found out it had 300 days left of regular warranty so she called dell. They said she wouldn't have it for 2 weeks as it would have to be sent off to a service center and she hung up on them after they set up the shipping order. 5 minutes later they call back and it's the supervisor. They tell her that not only are they going to repair the laptop, but they're also sending a replacement to her. I thought it was BS, but this morning DHL delivered a Brand NEW M1210, 1.86 core 2 duo, 2 gig ram, 100 gig 7200rpm hd, BT, TV Tuner w/Remote setup, and all those little XPS goodies. The box to ship the 9100 off to the service center arrived as well. Even if for some reason they keep the 9100, which they said they would not do, she got a hell of a deal. She has alot of systems on her account so maybe the manager saw that and really didn't wanna lose business?
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that the M1210 is under complete care warranty through 7/2008!

Just got the 9100 back today, but they forgot to include the ac adapter with it. Everything looks to be working just fine!

i remember my first 9100 used idle around 55 which is pretty awful. Although it only throttled down occasinley it was still very annoying. Most games are really affected if this happens if you have the MR9800 which was and i still think is a dam good card! .

Just dont give up when having to call dell over and over again i had to took about 6 months before they replaced my entire laptop ! well worth it.

I'm starting to get sick of the heat issues on my 9100. cleaned the fans a couple times and it never really helped much. Under a load the fans will take off and then it will just lock up. It's gotten so hot its melted into my desk. I'm going to try to talk to dell tomorow and see what they say.

Took about 3 minutes with a supervisor to get the to send a system replacement, he actually spoke good english too. Can't wait to see what they replace it with, hopefully a m1710.

Is there anyway to find out what they are sending me? All I got was a dispatch number.

hmm they said to me "blah blah .. it looks like we will have to replace your system" then he said they would be replaing it with a similar spec machine lucky the 9200 had just gone out of production and i got a spanking 9300. i asked if i could have XPS but you have to be XPs customer before and they wont accept money ontop either.
They should have told you though what model but if its not a XPS 9100 then itl be a 9400 or whatever the 17" laptop they do know.

They sent me a E1705 pretty well loaded with a T7200 and the nvidia graphics card. Unfortunately I took it out of the box to start it up and it did not work. 2 hours later Dell is saying it is the motherboard and a technician will come and fix it. Don't they test the new machines before they ship it out?

3 lcd changes because of bad image retention...i called because of the heat right above the power button.

they changed the cpu heatsink and fan. problem is still there. i called again saying the video card should be changed, that i am sure is the problem.

they insisted i have been through enough, and are getting me an exchange. i actually wouldnt mind keeping my 9100. everything runs well...it is setup exactly the way i want it with all the software i need. additionally i hate all the reflective screens. even after saying they will replace it with something new, i asked again to try replacing the gpu instead. oh well, lets see what they give me. they are supposed to call in a day or two.

We've had problems with this laptop pretty much since day one. Husband just finished a 45 minute live chat and they are sending us a replacement.

And just thought I would add, we were 17 months out of warranty. I think they do realize this was a real lemon in most cases.

Spoke with Dell support. Explained my problems with the 9100. They stated they will send out an exchange. I told them I did not want another 9100. Since the 9100 is out of production they highly doughted I would get another of the same. I asked what they would be sending out they said they did not know but will let me know as soon as they do! Wish me luck! I will keep you updated as soon as I know whats on the way.

ADVICE PLEASE
I also have an I9100 that has finally died. It always ran scorching hot but I regularly cleaned the air ducts and fans. I am currently one yr. out of warranty and decided to try chatting with dell. I said that the machine has overheated from day 1 and that is what caused my hardware problems. After some time chatting with this agent I got him to say that they would replace the mobo, heatsink, and fans free of charge. After further reading this forum I realized that the "fixed" laptop would probably just fry again. This is because I believe that there obviously is a design flaw with the 9100's. So I decided to call and I spoke to "Kevin" (In INDIA) who also said that they would fix the mobo, heatsink, and fans for free. I kept complaining about how I thought it was a flawed laptop design(due to evidence of this online) and that I did not want the same system for fear of going through the same problems. "Kevin" finally gave up on persuading me to get the 9100 fixed, and said that he was not authorized to give a system replacement. He took my # and said that a "manager" would call and talk with me monday evening or tuesday morning.

ADVICE PLEASE--cont.

I was wondering if anybody without a warranty has got a system replacement and what they said or did to get it? I hate to see a $2000 machine crap out so fast!
I did the online chat and so far they are replacing the fans. From what I have seen this will not fix it but I thought I would let them try and it does not fix the problem then I will start really complaining. Who knows it MIGHT fix mine. Mine has always gotten hot though, especially the bottom and the keyboard area. I got one of those laptop coolers that is constantly blowing air on the bottom of laptop and it still gets hot.

Sometimes I feel the underside and I think it is not that hot but I then I say it is pretty hot for just surfing the web (only surfing forums)!!

After a lengthy 45 min. chat I have a replacement on the way for my burned up 9100 thats 18 months out of warranty!!! THANKS TO THIS FORUM!!!

what exactly did you say to them. I talked to them again and now they are replacing the central fan and the mr9700.

Where are you? I'm in the California. It went simply like this, on my third chat session when I had already talked them into a free mobo and heatsink I said that I wanted a different system because this one was unsafe because it ran so hot. They tried giving me the department jerk around (out of warranty service, etc) and I said that I needed to chat with a supervisor that has the authority to offer a system replacement. Don't give in until they get a supervisor! After the supervisor came on I re-explained the situation to him and he said all they could do was fix it. I again said that I was unhappy because it was an unsafe fire hazard, and that I wanted to at least talk to a supervisor before I contacted a lawyer and informed him that there was already a law firm in san francisco investigating (which is true but i forget the site) these 9100's for a class action suit. That did it. He told me that I would have to send in my 9100 for safety inspection BEFORE they sent me the replacement unit. I said that was impossible due to my college situation with finals and papers due within the next 2 weeks. He then agreed to do a system exchange where they sent the new system first, but I was unable to find out with which system no matter how hard I tried. All that I got from them is that it would be better (video card, ram, processor, etc) and more up to date then my 9100. Now I must wait 5 business days for it to even ship but I can't wait. It's a good thing that they are doing this for me because there are obvious signs of temperature damage. All of the FCC compliance stickers have obvious heat damage, they are unreadable and have singed edges! Also bring up that there are plenty of websites and forums dedicated to overheating 9100's.

Here is the law firm that is investigating the overheating 9100's: http://www.lieffcabraser.com/dell-laptops.htm
