anyone recently have a 9100 die and get replaced? - Page 5

Yea...xps is pretty impressive for an upgrade like that. I had a maxed out 9100 back in the day and they sent me a 9300. I wish it was an XPS!!

Impessive Indeed!
ive been logging into my dell account and checking the service call status every hour hoping to see an update...right now it doesnt say much except for description "too hot to touch, parts only service, service ship date not available"

hopefully they will send it out today so i will get it either tomorrow or wednesday...i am praying that it is not another 9100...i would be in heaven if it was a 1710

what was the time frame the rest of yall had to wait? did anyone else get told that another 9100 was on teh way and something else showed up?
The time frame was 8 days before I would even recieve a call about the system, so I was told. I would kill for an M1710 as well, but it most certainly isn't going to happen. They told me another XPS Gen 1 as well, but THAT most certainly won't happen either because I'm 99% sure they don't have any Mobility Radeon 9800's in the back.

i cant wait to throw a fit if this system is anything less than what i had...i paid for the upgraded display, video card, dvd burner, b/t and 7200 rpm drive...we shall see....
Thats exactly what mine said and about 6 days later I checked the status and in the parts pertaining to this service, it said M1710. I was in shock, as I am sure you will be when it says the same. Hope you get one too!!
6 days?!? ughh alright i hope its worth the wait...in the meantime i will use my 9100 with a fire extinguisher within reach

edit: "5-15 business days, which is the time it takes us to assemble a system comporable to your setup"
its def. better than the alternative...keeping this hunk o junk...ill gladly wait, thanks dell

you know, they are going to just take a system from the outlet and ship it to you like they did me. Took about a week

I would wait until the replacement order is placed, then you will only be certain what you are getting... Getting another 9100 would suck tho'

It's funny, b/c I just bought a 9100/XPS from the dell outlet store. It has: P4 3.4Ghz w/HT, 1 Gig Ram, Ati mr9800 256mb video.. etc. I wonder if i can flip this into a M1710...

My gen 2 is having heating problems, after only replacing the gfx card they have offered me a m1710, i dont know the spec but the techie said he would email me the spec for me to ok, do you think that if i asked niceishly that they would give me the 7900gtx, if possible, is it worth a try?

Hell I say try it... as soon as I get my laptop in, I'm going to do a 24hr session of Oblivion on it... that'll give the video cards a good work out, maybe even burn it up! Maybe then I can get dell to flip it to a M170 or M1710.

so youre the one that bought that XPS... hee hee. I was in system replacement mode at dell (they offered replacement) and the first thing I checked was the outlet because that is where they get replacements from. I saw your XPS Gen1 listed and it disappeared the day after my replacement was authorized.....

boy did I get scared that they were going to send me that one....

Thanx for insuring me my new 1710

I feel better knowing that I helped someone.... My only hope is that someone is kind enough to help me

HJ945BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP), NOTEBOOK, T2400, CORE YONAH, 9400/E1705E1

ive got a new system on the way! its no 1710, but ill gladly take a 1705...i will have to inspect it when it shows up, and make sure it is "equal to or better than" my 9100...i am expecting it to show up with the standard 5400 rpm drive, which is going to be a huge problem for me, as i have the upgraded 7200 rpm drive in my 9100....we shall see...

damn too bad the new lappys have SATA. You could just switch em. I have to now run my extra drive externally.

But anyways, Congrats on the new lappy as these are a whole new world. I thought the XPS rocked for its time, but seeing this thing...

It would seem that Dell knows there is a problem with those portable BBQ's now. Did you have much trouble getting the replacement?
Honestly, it was quite simple to get a replacement from Dell. Once I found this website, i Had the fuel I needed, and was able to get a replacemnt issued.

Although, after today's news from Dell (see link below), I don't think it will be too hard for anyone to get a replacement. The article says 8 people reported damage to furniture from the heat of the laptop, well I was 1, but I don't think 8 is an accurate count at all. My ikea table has bubbles in the surface from the heat--and the table is 3 months old. Once I told Dell that, they were ready to help.

FedEx delivery by 10:30AM tomorrow...11 hours to go until I get a new laptop!

hey schorched, you had the 256Mb 9800 from ATi video card right ?
I don't think a 128Mb will do the same heat...

I'm not sure if anyone from the UK is reading these pages but Dell UK are replacing my 9100 too.....not with an m1710 like most of you guys but with a 9400. I'm still well pleased 'cos its a well spec'd 9400 and my 9100 is out of warranty and has been for 6months.

My only complaint is that its taking a while 'cos Dell are actually building mine

Not quite as good as the quick delivery of your m1710s that you guys are getting in the US but still I'm happy.

Hi, I'm a UK 9100 owner too and I've got the same old Prescot heat problems as a lot of you here on the forum.

Dell will only repair my laptop for a fee - I say repair, what I mean is they want to replace my heatsink "becasue it's probably worn out" and charge me GBP 205.00.

I see many people have persuaded Dell to repair/replace but how many of you have had machines repaired/replaced that were out of warranty? How did you persuade Dell to help you?

I tell Dell there are many users with similar problems as mine but they say there's just one or two posting many messages to many forums!!!!

Regards
Steve

Basically I started by having an online chat with a Dell engineer. Told him the truth about the cpu running super hot, up to 75degrees, and that I was worried it was gonna melt the motherboard. Told him it had already knackered by battery with the heat (my battery no longer charges), and that the underside was very very hot, heat through keyboard etc.

He agreed to help and made me run diagnostics (which it passed), then update the BIOS (which I'd already done). He called me a couple of times about troubleshooting, and in the end called and said we'll replace it with a 9400. I was all ready to complain alot and bring up the fire hazard etc. but didn't even need to.

My only complaint is the process has been slow (oh and that I've only got a 9400 rather than an m1710!!
