Macbook Pro running Windows XP only? - Page 2

OSX has been able to read NTFS partitions natively since 10.2 but still isn’t able to write to NTFS. I seem to remember some third party commercial software that would allow OSX to write to NTFS but I could be wrong about that.

question is now. can an ntfs XP partition read the OSX partition?

id still go 3 partitions, one ntfs, one HFS(?) and one fat32 for storage.

I didn't even know you said anything about a 32 gig limit. I was referring to the troll Spetsnaz Op. And even if you were to say something completely idiotic and stupid I'd never get pissy at you because I know you're not a troll.

wouldn't Reiserfs be a more logical sharing partition since both mac and windows can read it (although not really natively) and its more effective for small files (under 4kb) yet has the capacity to work with files larger than 4gb (unlike fat32)

Windows 2000 was the last version that had the option of formatting FAT32 or NTFS. XP allows for NTFS, which can be used to format drives over 32GB. The limitation may be with BootCamp, although I am not sure since I haven't worked with it yet.

XP allows formatting in FAT32, but it limits you to 32 gig partitions. I've had it confirmed to me that BootCamp seems to suffer no limit to partition size, at least as far as it's able to make partitions 50 gigs in size. The person who did it for me didn't try going higher.

If you want to run XP, use Boot Camp and set the OS X side to the smallest size OS X can live with. Then simply make XP the default startup choice (as you can in Boot Camp).

Presto! Running XP as the primary on a Macbook. Also, don't use FAT32, NTFS 5.0 is vastly superior.

I have got my MacBook to run windows only. Open up the Disk Utility erase the Mac OS Extended partition and create a new one. In the format choose the MS-DOS and partition it. Restart and press "C" with the windows xp professional sp2 and go through the setup and it works for me. Make sure you have the driver before you do this.

On a similar note has anyone tried on of the Linux live cd’s or DVD’s (Knoppix, Ubuntu Dapper, openSuSe live DVD). I am curious if they will run on the MBP.
Maybe I will go down to the local Apple reseller this weekend and see what happens.

m0e, yeah several linux distros already support working from EFI. From what i've read on ubuntuforums quite a few people have dapper running on their macbooks. you might wanna read into the details though to make sure that everything works.

edit: it seems ubuntu needs bootcamp

edit2: http://sourceforge.net/projects/elilo <---- lilo for efi solves all your problems

in the macbook box, are the OSX install cd's and whatnot in there? basically can the notebook be restored to "factory" if i put only the xp ntfs on the HD?
Yes - you should get the install disks with a new MacBook, and you can re-install to the factory settings.

this will include the dvd software and MSword thing correct? im assuming so since you said "back to factory settings"? just making sure though.

MSWord is just a demo version. I don't know if it's included on the install disks or not. It's been a long time since I had to use my original disks to reinstall the system. But all the Apple apps are included.

That's interesting. One PC I tried only allowed for NTFS. However just checking this one had the option for both. Strange...
