Geforce go 7900gs in a Dell D810 or M70?

Has anyone modified a Dell D810 or M70 with a the new Nvidia Geforce go 7900gs? I know that the 7800 series will work but was just curious if the 7900 will.

Thanks..

Electrically speaking, most probably. However, I doubt that it can be done because the original video card is missing one corner to allow the DIMM slot be there.

It's just a matter of trying. If someone is willing to trade a Quadro 1400 for a 7900GS I can report results back.

Can someone post or link to the physical differences between a 7800go/gtx and a 7900gs? I thought that they were about the same.

What about BIOS issues?

Thanks..

mikemex,

Thanks for the reply, I'd like to get more details about the missing corner. Do you have any pictures or links to pictures regarding this corner?

Thanks..

I don't think the BIOS will give you issues. I installed a 7800 GTX and it didn't complained at all.

Looking at the pictures it seems that it will fit will minor modifications or by removing that DIMM.

the bios will not be compatible with the 7900 at all same issue with the M170 though it will probably work with the M65 D820

D820/M65 video card is NOT modular. That's why I will wait until the Santa Rosa Merom for my next upgrade.

The video card in M70/9300 is nothing but a fancy PCI Express mini card. It will work if there is no BIOS lock to prevent it, like what happened with the 7800 GTX on the 9300. Latitudes usually doesn't have such locks.

mikemex,

Is there any way to check if there is a BIOS lock on a D810? I'd hate to buy the 7900gs and then have it not work or be recognized correctly. Does the 7800 go work because the BIOS recognizes it or will any mini-pci card work?

Thanks..

i tried taking the 7800 go non GTX version in a Latitude D810, it took a little modification to make it fit, but it would not post. There is a metal bracket that helps to hold the keyboard in, and one of the two clips that hold the ram in that had to be modified to allow it to fit. This was a card that i took out of a e1705. I was so pissed it wouldnt work. I would really like to find out if anyone had made the 7900gs work.

uncle,

Was your D810 BIOS upgraded to a04 or a05?

I'm thinking of taking the chance on the 7900gs wiht my d810 but $350 is a lot to spend if it does not work.

I tried both, but what I am kicking my self in the nutz(hidden tallent i have) over is that i didnt try force flashing the D810 to the Precision M70. Since the D810 motherboard is the same as the M70 it will work. If you think about it the D810 only supports ATI x300, or X600, and the intel media acelerator (900 or 950 cant remember which). But the M70 has support for Nvidia's work staition cards which are almost identical to the 7800 / 7900. What do you think?

Force flashing the D810 to an M70 is a good idea. Shadowmage has gotton a 7800 gtx in an M70 so that BIOS and system may be more compatible.

Another possibility is the firmware version on the 7800 go. It may not be compatible somehow but since the 7800gtx firmware is different, then its compatible.

It does sound like mikemex got a 7800 gtx working in a D810 and I got a 6800 go working in it so I'm not sure if its a BIOS issue. When your D810 did not post, did it do any beeps? If it did then it should be possible to determine what type of error is being reported.

Does the mod you performed still allow 2gb memory? Is the keyboard usable?

No, there was not a beep code. The LCD lit up, and then it all powered off. It was as if there was a short or something. At first I thought I screwed my laptop and or 7800go for sure. So I quickly put the 7800go back in the e1705 and it worked perfectly. I know the power requirements for the 7800go is more than that of the x600 that is currently in my system. That was the conclusion that I had come to. I just thought it didn’t have enough power. I know to get the GTX working you had to do some bios mods / volt mods to get it to work. If anything the 7900gs should have a better chance at working since its power requirements are much lower. The 7800 is like 40 watts and the 7900gs is about 25. I think it may even be lower than the x600 but dont quote me on it. As far as 2 gb and keyboard... i never got that far.

Don't worry. If you try and doesn't work I can offer you to trade it for a Quadro 1400. I upgraded my D810 first to Quadro and then to 7800 GTX before I sold it. That way you make use for the card (I just have it as a spare) and I get material to experiment and see if I can make it work.

I know this thread is kinda old - but has anyone heard about a D810 w/ a 7900GS by now?

It's already an old article, but these days I got one FX1500m which is based en go 7900GS and one 7800, so I find out my old M70and had a try!

But unforturnly, the M70 can but start up at all, the power indicator flashed for 1 seconds, then all black

I think the Bios can not support this video card.

BTW, I would like to ask for 7800 on D810 or M70, do you need to overclock it downwardly to decrease the temperature when playing 3D games?

In mine I have to decrease the clock rate under 300 mhz (400MHz original) to keep the temperature not too high.
